Papasan Chair & Frame - Brown

I have had several and love them! Perfect to curl up to a good book in. But DH made me get rid of them, he hates them!! :( I think he is so tall he can't get comfortable in them.

They are also a pier 1 specialty. I have always gone there for mine. Here is what their site says for decorating with one since its an akward piece of furniture.

If there’s one thing Pier 1 knows about, it’s the Papasan Chair!

We’ve been selling these unique chairs since we started business in 1962. This hip-hot seat is a best-selling staple in each and every Pier 1 store.

Originally designed and produced in the Philippines in the mid 1960’s, this chair was popularized by American service personnel who, after experiencing their ease of use and extreme comfort, shipped them back to the States.

It was one of our intrepid traveling buyers who re-discovered it in the Philippines, sourced it and discovered an economical method to ship them to the States. Once there, stocked in our San Mateo, California store, sales of this iconic chair took off.

The legend is born

The Papasan Chair, also known as a dish or moon chair, is a perennially popular choice for those furnishing their first dorm rooms, apartments and other spaces. This chair features a sturdy rattan frame that sits atop a durable base and a removable decorative cushion. Papasan Chairs have been a favorite for so many years because they are extremely comfortable, making them a great place to hang out while watching TV, reading, gaming or talking to friends.

Pier 1 Papasan Chairs are all handcrafted especially for us. Skilled craftsmen, most with 10-15 years experience, craft the chairs using natural rattan. Every joint in both the chair and the base are reinforced with nails and wrapped with rattan peel, adding a stylish decorative touch.

Papasan Chairs can vary in size from 35 to 60 inches in diameter (ours is 45 inches – we think it’s the perfect size). These remarkably comfortable chairs feature a round, bowl-shaped seat made of rattan. Top the chair with a Papasan Cushion, and the chair literally “cocoons” you all around while you sit. The bowl itself perches securely on top of a drum-shaped base. The base is slightly angled and has a larger opening at the top where the seat is placed. Since the base and the seat are not permanently attached, the angle of the chair can be tilted in a variety of ways, allowing the user to create a personalized fit.

Where oh where to put my Papasan Chair?

Want a fun, retro looking living room with unusual guest seating? Looking for something comfortable for your dorm or game room? Looking for sunroom furniture that doesn’t look too outdoorsy? All of these are good

reasons to think, “Papasan!” These cushy, comfy, hip and happening chairs have unbeatable goes-with-just-about-anything style!

Papasan Chairs make a great choice for any space. Not only are they durable and comfortable, but they are inexpensive as well. It’s true you don’t have to spend a fortune to get a great chair. And with an easy change of the cushion, you can transform the look of your Papasan to match the season, your mood, the color of your wall – any reason at all. The Pier 1 Papasan Chair gives you ultimate versatility and comfort – what more could you ask?

My SIL had one and I've sat in it a couple of times and I thought they were okay...I didn't understand her fascination with it.

I think that they are okay, but I prefer my living room furniture to look more grown up.

I could live in those chairs. One of my favorite memories as a kid was going to pier 1 with my mom. I'd curl up in a display chair with a book while she shopped
