We have a unusual floor arrangement.  The previous owners needed an extra bedroom, so they put up a false wall (basically plywood held up for the wall),  and one half has hardwood floors where the fireplace is at, and the other half is a tiled floor.  So we have tried to make it once again one room, till we can change the floors all to hardwood.

We have one unique thing and that is the window (actual glass), going down the stairs,  from the upper level.  So you can see the lower level,  makes it more open this way, and more light to enter,  (its a split level home).  The house came this way,  but we have really liked it,  instead of the sheetrock wall that usually would be there.

We haven't done anything but painted all the dark wood from the 70's white, and all the trim work has been painted white.

This is the part you see I am in front of the large sofa, looking into the other side where the TV, fireplace and loveseat are located.

We keep all the toys behind this large sofa, the sofa is in the middle of the room, facing the TV,  where the loveseat faces the fireplace. (excuse the mess)

See the white cupboard behind the TV?  That is where the wood for the fireplace comes in from outside. It has a roof lid on the outside, that the wood is thrown into and then we place it in the wood pile inside. Nice to not have to go outside to gather the wood only every few weeks,  this cupboard holds almost a 3/4 cord of split wood, ready to go into the fireplace.

The half wall shelfs were all dark old wood, and so was the cupboard. So I talked hubby into painting it white to make it look not as choppy in the room.  Its amazing when you see photos all the little things, that needed to be picked up before I took the photo....lol  just noticing that now. Hum....time to clean up the area more I see.  Too cluttered.  oh wait till I decorate for Christmas.  lol

I hate how high the mantel is,  but the heat vent was placed in such an odd location, the previous owners really messed that up, when they put it in.  To make the rooms more as one, we bought a rug remnant and put down between the wood floor and the tiled floor.

We heat the whole lower level with our fireplace.  From when we wake up in the mornings till bedtime, the fireplace is running.  Lots of trips to add wood to the fire,  is my job I guess.  At least we don't hear the furnace kick on much except during the night.  It gets very hot/toasty down here.

My Family Room...I have a open floor plan so my family room and kitchen are open to each other. I love it!

I seem to always notice when I see furniture in front of a window. Especially large pieces of furniture.

It is probably just me,  but am so used to floating furniture away from the walls if possible.

Do others seem to put all their furniture againest the walls,  I try not to in every room.  Of course a few things have to be againest the walls/windows,  but do most of us,  try to keep the windows from being blocked from furniture?

Just asking, for others insight on this question.

My kids have a playroom, yet they still bring all their toys downstairs to clutter the living room. I am in the process of getting rid of outgrown toys and making sure that they are all kept in their playroom.
