Auditory Sensitivity

Is hyper audio sensivity specific to Aspie's?  I know that both my son and I are very auditory sensitive as is my older son.  Recently my 2 year old granddaughter has began to verbalize her sensitivty as well.  The other day she was at my house and I was drying my hair.  She came to the bathroom door when I shut off the dryer and asked if I was all done.  I said "Yes, why?".  She told me she didn't like the hair dryer because it was too loud.  She also hates the vacuum, and fans.  And yet she is in a day-care setting that is crazy loud for me but she does fine there,

She is also an incredible ball of energy.  She seldom stops moving or talking.  She is unbelieveably smart.  Her language skills are amazing and her understanding as well.

Yes, I'm probably getting myself worried over nothing.  But after such a late diagnosis with my own son, I would want her to get whatever she needs before she starts school.  Right now, I can't imagine her calming down to be in a classroom.

Yes, many Aspies have SID (Sensory Integration Dysfunction), but it doesn't mean that everyone who has SID is Aspie!

There are kids/adults who have sensory issues (including Auditory sensitivity)  and they are NT's and not Aspies, so if you are worried about an Auditory sensory issue- her parents can take her for an Evaluation at OT, but I wouldn't jump to conclusions about her being an Aspie just because of this one trait (don't forget- it's in the family too).

I know how disturbing these things can be, but try to calm down. Let her parents know about what you see, and they'll make the decisions regarding her well being - that's what being a grandma is all about. You don't have to take it all on yourself like you did with Joseph!

Thanks Mic.  I know I tend to overthink things.  I saw her yesterday with my 3 year old niece and she is just a beautiful child.  I will now go off and put all my fears to rest.  LOL!!!
