This question is for those of us here who areeither diagnosed or self-diagnosed with Asperger's and also feel like they have OCD traits or are diagnosed with OCD.

Assuming you have the traits mentioned above... Is it fears you are consumed by or do you actually have compulsive behaviors (or both)?
do you get any treatment for the OCD traits? (if so what kind and does it help ?) or do you cope with it on your own? any tips as to how you can cope on your own?
Do you have obsessive thoughts rather than compulsions? Do you go to therapy for it and does it help? or do you cope with it on your own? any tips as to how you can cope on your own?

I'm asking not only because I have OCD traits and feel like I am struggling with this, but also because I was asked a few times about this issue by other moms, so I thought that perhaps if we open this issue up for discussions it would help.

By the way, there is a show on Cable TV about OCD, called "obsessions" (it's on channel Arts & Entertainment or for short- A&E tonight at 10:00pm) - it shows people who have OCD who go through behavioral treatment and how it helps them in a rather short amount of time (a few months). It's very interesting to watch, for those of you who are struggling with this issue.

  • Ok, I'll be the first to answer:

Is it fears you are consumed by or do you actually have compulsive behaviors (or both)?

I have many fears,  phobias and obsessive thoughts that I'm dealing with as well as a few compulsive behaviors that have started years ago.

do you get any treatment for the OCD traits? (if so what kind and does it help ?) or do you cope with it on your own? any tips as to how you can cope on your own?

I have coped with it on my own so far but with most of the 'symptoms' it's been unsuccessful, so now I think I will start working on what I couldn't make progress with in therapy with my psychologist.
my only tip would be- exposure to what you fear the most (as much as possible), but to do it in small steps! for example, one of my biggest phobias are initiating a phone call (now don't laugh!). I always could answer the phone fine, but to initiate a call was a different story. How did I work on it by myself? Well, I used to write on a paper what to say when I'd call, then practice and role play, then call. But first my calls were to family members, then friends, then once in a while a professional call or doctor to make appointment...order Pizza, whatever- I'm still at that level of the Once in a while... never got to the "I can call whoever I want to whenever I want to". Not yet anyway, but I can call family and friends when I want to now.
Small steps (first people I know and close to, then the strangers).

Do you have obsessive thoughts rather than compulsions? Do you go to therapy for it and does it help? or do you cope with it on your own? any tips as to how you can cope on your own?

As I said, I have both, although I have many more obsessive fears and thoughts than compulsive behaviors, and really they are the ones that bother me the most

  • If fears are an  OCD trait then I have it, but I am not an Aspie.

My husband is OCD when it comes to cleaning.

I do a lot of obessive thinking...but the funny thing they are about my Aspie child not my NT child, I really don't  have to many obessive thoughts about him because I know he will be fine.

I thought that was an anxiety trait.

I don't think that having fears about your son or thinking about him all the time is considered OCD traits, but I guess it depends on how much of the time you do think about him and what do these thoughts consist of. Like, if your thoughts are obsessive thoughts as a fear of death or a fear of him doing something bad or something like that and that's all you can think about and it makes you anxious all day every day, then yes- that is OCD kind of thoughts.

OCD is a type of an Anxiety disorder

If you check this website, you'll see that OCD is under Anxiety disorders, just as social phobia, panic disorder and so on.

i have certain ways i want things placed or done and if someone does it wrong i get upset. i also like to line things up in straight lines and/or by colors, but i don't HAVE to and i don't get upset if it's disturbed, it's just something i've always done. i've always thought i had OCD traits, but they aren't bad enough to disturb my everyday life. i feel sorry for some of the people who have extreme OCD.
