The day had started like any other day; there wasn't even the tiniest flicker of warning that what was to come would change my world forever.
The day had started like any other day; there wasn't even the tiniest flicker of warning that what was to come would change my world forever. I had to blink my eyes several times to come out of the deep sleep that fought so hard to keep me placed and free from my ordinary routine of a day. Journeying hadn't been my idea but there had been speculation that the volcano wasn't safe, and the island could potentially be in danger, along with all of those who resided upon it.
Kill the beast? How was I ever to accomplish such an act of heroism? Me? The girl who was best known to be a beast?
Life had a funny way of challenging a person, and I wondered if this challenge would be far too much for me to handle, let alone accomplish without maiming myself or anyone else.

Marissa and Eric both believed that I could rise to such a challenge, but I had my doubts. What made them both so certain and sure of me that I could possibly kill such a creature? Was it to be to my demise? Would it be the end for all of us, if I failed in this task?? I couldn't help but wonder....

Northern winds rocked the ship and I could hear the vessel's boards creaking under the strain as my stomach turned topsy turvey. I'd never been on a ship before and so far, I knew I never wanted to be again. I looked across my cabin to the barrel sitting there with water sloshing around inside of it, a harpoon strung with rope, hanging on a hook beside the door, waiting for me to grab it.

Over the horizon a shadow appeared, dark and daring me to stare. I slowly raised myself up from the creaky ground, with hand stretched reaching for the harpoon. Suddenly the ship twisted to the north and I watched in slow motion as the harpoon fell....

Propping myself against the ledge of my bunk, the clatter of the harpoon falling struck a resounding chord in my mind. Was this the time? I watched the door, waiting for it to open, listening to the footsteps, or deck commands given above, yet heard nothing more than calls to brace for the wind. My breath gave way and I realized I had been holding it. We were turning, but not to go after the sea creature.
Quoting Cathie111:Instead the captain, a small and wirey woman with poorly bleached hair and hands of a deckhand decided to turn tail and run. I was outraged and stumbled over the contents of my quarters to go and convince her to turn the boat around. Had I come this far and not get a chance to fufil this destiny?
