Hi...my name is Hollie and I'm new to the group and I was diagnosed with lupus in Oct. 2010. It came as a shock to me. I went to the doc because I was constantly in pain everywhere so after running tests he concluded that I had lupus. I was devastated....so I immediately got started on meds. In July I lost my job and therefore my insurance and as you all know the meds aren't cheap so I had to stop taking them. Then in October of this year I started bleeding vaginally one day. At first I thought it was my period and didn't really worry about it...then I started passing huge clots..my husband finally convinced me to go to the doc and after many tests they discovered I had ITP which is Thrombocytopenia which in lamens terms is when your blood doesn't clot. So basically if I were to get even a small cut or scratch I couuldve bled out and died within minutes. They immediately put me in icu and started 2 forms of chemo medication and steroids to help rebuild my platelettes. I was in the hospital for a total of 5 weeks until my platelette count was high enough to safely be at home. It turned my life totally upside down...I came home the week before thanksgiving and just. In the past few weeks have I had the strength to do even minor housework. I am on countless medications for the lupus including cellcept and plaquenil. I am also on dexamethasone for the platelettes and have to go for weekly injections of NPLATE which is a form of chemo. Any of you that are on these meds know what havoc they can have on your body. I am losing my hair like crazy and my eyelashes. And the steroids cause horrible swelling so I don't even look like myself. Its bad on the self esteem for sure. But when I get down I just pray and thank God everyday that I'm still alive because I very well could've died if not for my husband getting me to doc. I hope to connect with other moms that have this horrible disease and share insight in coping with it. Hope to hear from y'all soon!
