Exodus 1 (NIV)

The Israelites Oppressed
1.These are the names of the sons of Israel who went to Egypt with Jacob, each with his family:
8.Then a new king, who did not know about Joseph, came to power in Egypt.
9."Look," he said to his people, "the Israelites have become much too numerous for us.
10. Come, we must deal shrewdly with them or they will become even more numerous and, if war breaks out, will join our enemies, fight against us and leave the country."
11.So they put slave masters over them to oppress them with forced labor, and they built Pithom and Rameses as store cities for Pharaoh.
12.But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread; so the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites
13. and worked them ruthlessly.
14. They made their lives bitter with hard labor in brick and mortar and with all kinds of work in the fields; in all their hard labor the Egyptians used them ruthlessly.
15.The king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, whose names were Shiphrah and Puah,
16. "When you help the Hebrew women in childbirth and observe them on the delivery stool, if it is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, let her live."
17.The midwives, however, feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them to do; they let the boys live.
18. Then the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and asked them, "Why have you done this? Why have you let the boys live?"
19. The midwives answered Pharaoh, "Hebrew women are not like Egyptian women; they are vigorous and give birth before the midwives arrive."
20.So God was kind to the midwives and the people increased and became even more numerous.
21. And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families of their own.
22. Then Pharaoh gave this order to all his people: "Every boy that is born you must throw into the Nile, but let every girl live."

Question:
1.What do you know about the book of Exodus?
2.Do you know who wrote it?
3.Do you know why it was written?
4.Why do you think they feared the Israelites growing numbers.?
5.What did you learn from this chapter?
6.Why do you think they killed the boys and not the girls?
Moses is the author of exodus
It is a record of events of the deliverance of the Israelites out of Egypt
The egyptians feared the Isrealites would gather and organize to fight against them, or even join with their enemies.
I think they would kill the boys and not the girls because the boys would grow to be strong and fight and also would marry and have more babies they were trying to control the population of the Israelites.
I believe it was written by Moses. It is about the Israelites leaving Egypt.
I think they feared the Israelites bc the new Pharoh did not know Joseph and what happened with him. So he did not know God or fear him. He did not know that they were Gods chosen ppl.
He wanted they baby boys killed so that they could not rise up against him. Women were not allowed to join the army, or do the fighting. They stayed behind to take care of the sick and the old. Staying with the families, and tend to the sheep. The Israelites had many little blessings running around and more kept coming.
Even tho the midwives lied, God blessed them with families of their own. Not sure if I like how this is worded. It makes it sound as if they were rewarded for lying. When they were rewarded for being God fearing women.
If we fear God more than man then we will do as he would want us to. And in doing that he will bless us and protect us.

Thank you sister your answers are right for those question that had right and wrong answers to them. I think the only one that is left is did you learn anything you would like to share with us or is there anything you would like to share with us about this chapter.
Cindy I understood what you were saying about the blessing the midwives got. It's so true they were not lying they feared the Lord more than man as the Lord would want all of us to do. What can man do to us that God can't stop or do worse, just not being in Gods grace and presence would be worse then anything that man could do amen.
Moses wrote Exodus. Its a record of the history God showed us about the trails and tribulation the
children of Isreal went through, and shows us how much he loves us , no matter what the situation or how bad it is- he's always going to come through for us. The Egyptions killed the boys for fear of an uprising against them ![]()
