It is my belief not all dreams are created equal, and there are actually different and specific types. They are as follows:

Subconcious Messages
Probably the most common of all dreams. Those dreams that may seem weird, but are designed to give you insight on specific problems. Also can be "called apon" to help you through hard times or difficult questions. For example, years ago I questioned my relationship with a certain man. I told myself I would have a dream about him that night, and I did. It was a terrifying dream, and gave me more insight on the person he was. I didn't heed the dream, stayed with him, and was abused later on.

Travel and Contacting

Usually if you are speaking directly to friends or family that have passed you are traveling (out of body). Not always though, making them tricky to spot. They can also be "called on" if practiced. Such as telling yourself before you go to sleep you want to go to a specific place, and going there in your dream.

Premonitions
Very rare for most, although they DO happen. Some may come in "codes" (often blown off as "just a weird dream"), while some are clear as day. Others can even put you in the place of who the event is going to happen to. I've had all three.

Current Thoughts and Worries
Sometimes a dream is just a dream. Those weird dreams we have of all the main thoughts in our head at that point in time, regardless if they are important or not. Dreams where you've cast yourself as a character in your favorite TV show, mixed with events going on in your own life. You know, the "weird" dreams. Although don't be quick to blow these off - they MIGHT actually be message dreams. ;)

While I hate to put anything into "little pegs", generally dreams are a certain type. Not to say a dream can't be several different types though, it's just a matter of figuring out which kind it really is.
