What amount and types of homework do your first graders have? Do you think it is enough, too much, or about right?
This is what a typical week looks like for my daughter: Reading: Read for 30 minutes each night, including weekends. Spelling: 10 words per week for which she has to write them 3 times each on Monday, Tuesday put them in abc order, Wed, write a sentences using at least 3 of the words. Thursday, Practice Spelling Test. For Math she usually has 2 sheets come home 2-3 times per week. (These take her about 5 minutes each.) Bring 5 sharp pencils every day. (This keeps the teacher from having to assist with sharpening.)
She may have a few other things come up occasionally, but that is the general list.
THIS WEEK: (Note: Tabitha is reading at the second grade level.)
Tabitha had a "book report" sheet come home to complete on a book she has read. She also has a Book Club project due tomorrow on the same book. There was a list of things she could do for this project and she could select anythng from the list. She will need to present her project to the class. She selected "Make a Pop-Up Book." It came out really cute..but it took awhile to do.
I am happy with the amount of homework Tabitha is getting and so is she. It is enough to practice, but not enough to overwhelm her.

Sounds like a lot of homework compared to my dd.
My daughter is attending a French Immersion school in Ontario, Canada. She took Jr & Sr Kindergarten in English and now will only be learning French until she goes into Grade 4.
Each week the teacher sends a homework sheet, where there is a task each night. Depending on the task it's usually about 15 minutes work or so.
They bring home one French library book a week, and we are asked to help them read it. Its recommended we read them English books as well, which is usually done at bedtime with her help.
Each month there is a new vocabulary list with 15-20 new words (pretty much the same as a spelling list) for my dd to work on. We go over it a few nights a week.
So far not much math homework, but I know they work on it in class as the work is sent home.
Outside of school my ex and I work with her on printing and writing. He has activity books for her to do when she visits him.

We get the weekly summary of homework on Monday, but the assignments are due individually.
Four spelling activities... writing 3 times each, rhyming words, etc.
A 5-page story to read, with questions to answer or word patterns to find.
One or two math worksheets.
A short book report every weekend... really, more like just answering questions.
I'm satisfied with the amount, it never takes her very long, but she really dislikes homework.

dang that sounds like alot compared to my son. on mondays he comes home with 2 math worksheets, usually front and back and has to write 3 telling sentences and 3 asking sentences and he has to have one of his voc. words in it and underlined. it is all due on fridays. practice his spelling words for a test on thurs and friday. he has a AR book that the whole class reads together that he has to read and his library book, he just got to a 2nd grade level before thanksgiving, i was so proud. about once a month they have a family project that is sent home and we have 2 weeks to get it done. everyday he comes home with lots of work that they have done at school though.

When my daughter was in 1st she had a homework packet that was due on Friday. It had reading, comprehension, and math. She also had 10 spelling words that she had to write sentences for. She is in second grade now and they have 10 spelling words plus 5 bonus words each week. They get to pick a way to write them that the teacher has on a sheet of paper in their folder. (ABC, write consonants in blue and vowels in red, cons=5 vowels=10 then add them up, silly sentences, etc. There are quite a few to choose from.) She also has to read 30 min/night (which she has been doing since she was 4 anyway) and write if it was easy, just right, too hard, get it signed. Oh and she also randomly gets a worksheet. On Thursdays she has a math worksheet to do. It doesn't seem like too much. Actually I think there could be more. Especially since the reading isn't considered homework to her. She often comes home with extra spelling and math work from specials too. I believe that's exclusive to her though.
I think the sharpened pencils thing is odd.
Brenton has about 10 spelling words to practice every night. either writing over and over or in abc order different spellling activites for these words. spelling test every friday for these words
about 6-8 new high frequency words to know how to read and reconize each week
They have 2 AR books to read every week
they also have rigby level books to read each night
and 1 or 2 math worksheets a week
about every 2 or 3 weeks they'll have a new project to do kinda arts and crafty like decorating a snowman or something for the upcoming holiday
I would like to see more math because thats what my son struggles with but she sent me home an extra text book from class to do extra study
William is in a regular ed 1st grade class. He has autism; but, works with an aide! He is in a lower level reading group. Gifted math and spelling, and regular everything else!
Homework is:
1. Math worksheet every day!
2. 6 - 10 spelling words every week!
3. Reading worksheet every day. Basal reader story once a week (at least 15 - 20 pages)
4. Social skills practice
WOW. That all sounds like more than my son does. On Monday, he gets a folder with a math packet that has to be turned in on Friday. He also has a book he has to read and do 2 assignments from. And 10 spelling words to know plus one bonus word. On Tuesday, he has another book, but no assignments. On Wednesday he has another book, again with no assignments. On Thursday, he has a practice spelling test. And no homework on Friday.
What amount and types of homework do your first graders have?
Monday and Wed: we have math sheets
Tues and Thurs: a spelling packet due friday.
all week the familiar folder which is a book or books depending on the childs reading level. My dd is on a upper 3rd grade level now and gets a chapter book to read each week. They also have to read other books if they want to participate in book-it(the pizzahut reading program)
She does very good with all of this.
Do you think it is enough, too much, or about right?
I think its enough. She could handle more if they gave her more though.
Personally I think my daughter gets way to much homework for her age. She has to read a book every night, a math sheet or three, then her words every night, and read another book of her choice. They also have list of words they are to have done my the end of the year we have to work on each night and some reading exercise that have to be done every week.
I think its got to be to much. She doesnt mind the amount because it makes her feel like a older kid or a big girl I guess you would say but I am only 24 yrs old and remember that I didnt have this much homework until I hit 5 th or 6 th grade. Plus the math they are doing is what we were doing in the 4th grade when I was in school. Its got to be crazy. Doesnt help the teacher is a...well not very good at her job.
My first grader has 1 or 2 math worksheets per day. She has 10 spelling words to learn per week, but no specific spelling homework. She always knows how to spell the words when she brings them home on Monday.
I require her to read at least one book to me at bedtime every night, but this is MY rule. Usually we read 3 or 4 books, and she and I alternate reading every other page.
Her reading and spelling skills BLOW ME AWAY!
I think the amount of homework is fair.
