Okay, so I guess it's bound to happen, but anyhoo- my son is almost 2 now so this hallowe'en he is really geting into it and reading books at school, decorating the classroom, etc. so we're at the grocery store and he points out "ghost" and "pumpkin" and then on aisle 5 there was a scary, green faced long nosed manequin with a cauldron in her hand ...."witch" he says, all proud of himself...... sigh- yes, I told him, a popularized version of a scary stereotype. So what do I say that he's understand? Im glad he's learning stuff in school but even with the circle round music and stories, he still learns these popular associations....

I know what your saying. It is hard for them to understand what the real meaning of a witch is while they're still so young, especially since most of the world still portrays her as the ugly green hag.  I always tell my young daughter that mommy is a "good witch."  She probably doesn't take me seriously, or thinks that I'm pretending to be like Glenda from the Wizard of Oz. LOL.  I guess as they get older, they'll understand better (with us explaining it to them, of course).

On that note, my daughter wants to be a witch for Halloween.  Thankfully, she wants to be a "good witch."  She wants me to put make-up on her this year.  So I'm going to be creative with her make-up. As long as she's happy about this, I plan on drawing on her face some "earthy designs", like things that represent the elements, the moon, maybe a sun, etc., rather than a green face with a wart on her nose, LOL!.

My daughter is going to be the a costume called the Elegant Witch.  here is what it looks like:

Elegant Witch Costume: Toddler's Size 2-4 - Model 373666 at Kmart.com

The colors are all earthy looking and it is adorable!  I am hoping to help her associate early on that Witches are the really like the ones they portray at Halloween/Samhain.  She honestly has no clue what those are and just calls all the decorations at the store the scaries.  This is the first year though she has even really noticed them.

I like the concept of fairy-tale witches. I think really young children would understand that or that they are "silly". My boys understand that word a lot better than others LOL.

Teach him about the Crone!  Tell him that there ar young girl witches call "Maidens", and groan-up lady witches called "Mothers" and there's old Granny witches called "Crones"!  And since this is the time of year when everything is "dieing" and the Earth is "going to sleep" that's why we see so many Crone this time of year!

Ugh! We're not there yet, but I can see it from here! I like very much the "fairytale witch" explanation as well as emphasizing the crone aspect of the goddess. Well thought ladies!!

My DD is wearing the SAME costume! It is adorable-isn't it! She wanted to be a black cat until we got into the Halloween store and she was VERY adament about being a witch .(she will be 3 in Nov). She then insisted on having a wand and tried to turn us all into pumpkins......I guess I have some work there, but I have to admit it was cute. With the witch word I just say good witch and bad witch (like in the wizard of Oz). But with my older DD (who is 7) I make it a point talk about the fact that MAKES her a good witch or a bad witch is NOT how she looks but how she ACTS. This is a true-ism in all relationships with people. I just want my DD to not take a look at a depiction of an older witch and automatically think she is a "bad" or "evil" witch. I want to teach my kids that the older woman can be beautiful and wonderful as woman can in her young and mother forms-as is the goddess.

Mine too! Actually she said she wanted to be "Abby" (her name) then she went straight over and picked out the witch costume. I am also not doing ugly paint, but plan on doing a little blush and lipstick. I got her the cutest little broom and plastic cauldron at Wal Mart. Her outfit is too cute complete little hat and everything. I am a witch every year. Go figure~

I LOVE it - you guys are GREAT!!! I love that costume, by the way, I am still kicking myself for not getting a similar hat I saw for myself... That crone idea is great too- that's right about the older lady portrayed during samhain- I never thought about it that way. And the fairytale version/silly /make believe witch explanation might work with him.

I feel TONS better! Thanks!!!

My daughter has to pick a character from a book, which for her is awesome because she reads constantly (she's 6).  So, she is going to be Morgan Le Fey from the Magic Tree House series.  I am planning on plaiting in some filigreed leaves, and maybe an owl into the wig  and maybe (if I can find one)  crow...to Brynne she is a character in a book - to me, she is one of the great ones.
