I thought I'd put a sticky post up here since we have a lot of spiritual birth professionals. I'd like to keep a string of birth rituals, rite of passage ceremonies, etc. that people can refer to.
Along those lines, a few people asked me about my Blessingway. I had hoped to do more of a ceremony, but it was intertwined with a shower... it actually came across well and my more conservative relatives participated. Really cool. Reminds me of the scene in Practical Magic where the mainstream mommies are in circle together for the banishing spell :)

I didn't do a birth blessing ceremony, myself, but have been to a few for other mamas and am going to another one on Sunday, too. My favorite part is the string that weaves us women together that stays on our wrists until mamas is birthing. Each time we look at our wrists until then, we see the constant reminder of our sister-mama and can offer her a private blessing, sending positive energy her way. I keep the strings and decorate a mirror so that I can have constant reminders of those women in their pre-motherhood time and the beautiful changes they went through. And I was just reading about Birth Alters last night, I wish I'd had one. :-)

Kate,
for the birthing itself It was more 'play it by ear' (or by feel) as the laboring progressed. I wore my birth beads from the Blessingway, made some tea, sang, and lit lavender candles to meditate to. I wanted to do an invocation or chanting, but didn't have the focus, although I did a lot of visualization and relaxations....
I found this birthing chant online at sacred-texts:
Tiny bud, swelling nub, resting in the womb
Unleashing spark, in the dark, birthing to be soon
Healthy child, labor mild, mother safe and strong
Nature flow, now to grow a household before long

I didn't write it, and unfortunately it did not give credit to any author on line, so it should be fine.
That's pretty cool- I had lots of belly tattoos and paintings - I loved my belly!

I did something for Sophia that I think is so cool. It's sort of a family tradition. I made her a baby blanket. Then I had all my female family members & friends sew in a securing thread & as they tied it off they made a wish or say a prayer for her. Now, I know it's kinda tricking mainstream people into doing some knot magic, but I think all the positive vibes tied into that blanket makes it well worth it! ;-)
