I have been "discovering" some really beautiful quotes about motherhood and babies lately, and I was thinking of posting them. Anyone else want to add some? This seemed like a great group to do this in!

Dawn is the child wet with birth. -Charlotte de Clue

There is nothing on Earth like the moment of seeing one's first baby. Men scale other heights, but there is no height like this simple one, occurring continuously throughout all ages in musty bedrooms, in palaces, in caves and desert places. I looked at this rolled up bundle...and knew again that I had not created her. She was herself apart from me. She had her own life to lead, her own destiny to accomplish; she just came past me to this Earth. -Katherine Trevelyan

Dad has long and earnest conversations with his baby daughter. He tells her she is noisy, undisciplined and manipulative and she will be sent back if she doesn't pull herself together. And the baby smiles complacently. She has him exactly where she wants him. -Pam Brown

To care for a child was not an alien duty imposed on me by a hostile culture...it was rather the core, the emotional wellspring, the gravity that held my soul in place. -Anne Roiphe

Every child is more precious and more wonderful than all the wonders of the universe- more intricate than every swirl of suns- more capable of change and growth and new creation. And for we who love you, of all those children....you are the most valued, the most necessary to our joy. Your eyes will see, your mind explore, your heart will love, your hands create. Be glad of life- of this extraordinary gift. -Pam Brown

Small child. Clear crystal. Bright and dear. Faceted as none before you. Catching the light from every lovely thing and turning it into a rainbow. reflecting beauty back into the world. making all things new.  -Pam Brown

There is nothing like raising a baby to make a person feel, every day, like part of a mutual endeavor shared with all of humanity and to realize the miraculous effort of love that goes into the perpetuation of the human race.  -Anonymous

I wish you so much. But most of all, I wish you to be your own true self. To take all the gifts that you were born with and make of them marvels of beauty and ingenuity and astonishment. -Pam Brown

  • beautiful!!

Yes, please do- I can make it a sticky post ... (can you edit your title to something like mama/baby quotes or childhood quotations...).

I know one of our members has a group 'quoting together' where you can also find some great quotes,

but the idea of magical child focus for quotes and poems is fantastic and something we can share with our lil ones too. I am actually planning to paint some in Malachi's room... I finally finished the dragon on his wall!

  • Teaching Children about the natural world should be treated as one of the most important events in their lives."

Thomas Berry, Dream of the Earth

"What do parents owe their young that is more important than a warm and trusting connection to the Earth...?"

Theodore Roszak, The Voice of the Earth

"Children have a natural affinity towards nature. Dirt, water, plants, and small animals attract and hold children's attention for hours, days, even a lifetime-so eloquently portrayed by Robert Pyle. This conclusion, drawn from observations of children over many years, supports the "biophilia hypotheses" of biologist E. O. Wilson, which suggests that humans are genetically programmed to be drawn to nature-not surprising since we are an integral part of the natural system."

Natural Learning, Creating Environments for Rediscovering Nature's Way of Teaching, Robin C. Moore and Herb H. Wong

"What if there are stronger, more affirmative bonds, bonds of love and loyalty? What if we really are part of the natural world out of which we evolved, which mothered us into existence? Then conceivably we are bound to the natural environment in much the same way that we are bonded to the loved ones around us in a family. And that's a very strong motivation to tap if you believe it's there and if you can awaken it."

Interview with Theodore Roszak, author of Voice of the Earth

"As a child, one has that magical capacity to move among the many eras of the earth; to see the land as an animal does; to experience the sky from the perspective of a flower or a bee; to feel the earth quiver and breathe beneath us; to know a hundred different smells of mud and listen unselfconsciously to the soughing of the trees."

Valerie Andrews A Passion for this Earth

"I sincerely believe that for the child, and for the parent seeking to guide him, it is not half so important to know as to feel. If facts are the seeds that later produce knowledge and wisdom, then the emotions and the impressions of the senses are the fertile soil in which the seeds must grow. The years of early childhood are the time to prepare the soil."

Rachel Carson, A Sense of Wonder

"At age seven, children have as passionate a longing for creative interactions and learning as they earlier had for explorations of the world."

Joseph Chilton Pearce, The Magical Child

"Without continuous hands-on experience, it is impossible for children to acquire a deep intuitive understanding of the natural world that is the foundation of sustainable development. ….A critical aspect of the present-day crisis in education is that children are becoming separated from daily experience of the natural world, especially in larger cities.

Natural Learning, Creating Environments for Rediscovering Nature's Way of Teaching, Robin C. Moore and Herb H. Wong

"I have described human beings as those organisms who possess a basic set of 7, 8 or a dozen intelligences. Thanks to evolution, each of us is equipped with these intelligence potentials, which we can mobilize and connect according to our own inclinations and our culture's preferences…. My review process indicates that the naturalist's intelligence clearly merits addition to the list of the original seven intelligences."

Intelligence Reframed: Mulltiple Intelligences for the 2lst Century , Howard Gardner

"If we want children to flourish, to become truly empowered, then let us allow them to love the earth before we ask them to save it. Perhaps this is what Thoreau had in mind when he said, "the more slowly trees grow at first, the sounder they are at the core, and I think the same is true of human beings."

    David Sobel, Beyond Ecophobia

"Only as a child's awareness and reverence for the wholeness of life are developed can his humanity to his own kind reach its full development."

Rachel Carson, Edge of the Sea

  • "Flowers have the sun, and children have their mothers."

"A mother's love is a favorite song, playing softly, steadily, constantly in the hearts of her children."

"From the beginning a mother is writing a poem of life, composing a song of joy, and creating a miracle that will make the world brand new again." -Dean Walley

  • These are all really beautiful quotes! Thanks for sharing. Does anyone have quotes, sayings or poems/rhymes or even short story ideas that are apropriate for teaching tools for toddlers? I have VERY limited access to internet and even less to usefull books because of where I live and available finances... Seems to be that the only people around this area that claim to be any sort of pagan are confused teens that are into some real freaky dark stuff or just plain ol' filled with fluff 'tween the ears! I have been interested in Wicca and Shamanism since I was a young kid but am kind of adrift out here in no-man's-but-Catholic-land!

    Blessed Be! Adria
