What books do you have in your library?  What books do you suggest other LCs and BFCs should have in theirs?  What books do you think nursing moms should have at home?  What books do you think are a waste of money?  What books give bad advice?

Books I have:

·           The Breastfeeding Answer Book by La Leche League International

·           Medications and Mothers Milk by Thomas Hale, PhD

·           The Ultimate Breastfeeding Book of Answers by Jack Newman MD and Teresa Pitman

·           The Complete Book of Breastfeeding by Marvin S. Eiger, MD and Sally Wendkos Olds

Books I wish I had:

·           The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding by La Leche League International

·           The Breastfeeding Book by Martha Sears, RN and William Sears, MD

Books that I think new nursing moms should have:

·           The Nursing Mother's Companion by Kathleen Huggins, RN

·           The Complete Book of Breastfeeding by Marvin S. Eiger, MD and Sally Wendkos Olds

Books that are a waste of money (in my opinion):

·           What To Expect… by Eisenberg, Murkoff, and Hathaway

o       This whole series is just a bunch of what if...  It makes moms feel nervous and inadequate

Books that give bad advice (in my opinion):

·           On Becoming BabyWise by Ezzo and Bucknam

o       This book promotes scheduling an infant’s feedings and has been linked to dehydration, malnourishment, and death.  In my opinion it is the worst thing to be published about parenting.  It does not teach listening to your child’s cues nor does it promote bonding.

I tried to color code it, but I don't think it worked so hot.  Oh well ;)

I have "The Breastfeeing Book of Answers" required by my CBC course, and LLL's "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding", and Dr Newman's book...can't remember the title.

Here is a page that has reviews of non LLL Books:

http://www.llli.org/bookreviews.html

the next breastfeeding books I buy will be the ones required for my Lactation Consultant course

Required Reading for Course 511
  • Lauwers, Judith and Swisher, Anna , Counseling the Nursing Mother: A Lactation Consultant's Guide, Sudbury, Massachesetts, Jones and Bartlett Publishers, 2005.
  • Lawrence, Ruth: Breastfeeding: A Guide for the Medical Profession, St. Louis, C.V. Mosby, 2005.
  • Riordan, Jan, Breastfeeding and Human Lactation, Sudbury, Massachesetts, Jones and Bartlett Publishers, 2005.

and I suppose the ultimate authority for those of us wanting to be an IBCLC should the IBLCE, and here is their reading list:

http://americas.iblce.org/documents/SuggestedReadingList.pdf

I don't think I will EVER finish!

PS--I think it is definitely important for a budding CBC or IBCLC to also do some reading on AP as well....

Anything by Jack Newman and the most haves for LC's Catherine Genna Watson's Supporting Sucking Skills. Finally something out there explains the sometimes failures. I seem to get those mothers who have babies with the strange oral anatomy and this book is a must have because it will help you understand when a mom comes to you and everything that you know is still not  helping her achieve successful breastfeeding. This book explains why and how to help.

I absolutely LOVE the Dr. Newman video!  We have this on our skyline at our hospital, and we show it to our moms before they go home.  It has GREAT visuals, GREAT information.  It makes breastfeeding make sense.  It makes latch on make sense.  It's the BEST breastfeeding video I have EVER EVER EVER seen.  Our moms just GET IT after watching it.  We finally have it in Spanish on our skyline now also....a HUGE benefit!

I have The Breastfeeding Answer Book by LLLI
The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding by LLLI
And have read The Breastfeeding Book by Dr. Sears

Big waste of time is any of the What To Expect books. I also agree that AP is a good area to dip into when in this line of studying. It helps teach parents to learn and follow baby's cues.
