im not judging and do not want to start anything negative, so please leave the debate of nicotine use out of this :).

i just know some have a hard time quitting (as a former 2 time smoker i understand!), and im currently studying some of my homework for my Lactation Education and found this i thought would be beneficial info for mums who nurse and maybe smoke a little bit.

Breastfeeding is magical! :)

Maternal Smoking 1

  • Women who smoke are less likely to breastfeed successfully compared to women who do not smoke. 50
  • Research suggests that infants of smoking mothers are healthier if they are breastfed. Although smoking increases the risk of respiratory illnesses and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) in infants, breastfeeding offers the infant protection.
  • Smoking may reduce milk volume due to inhibition of let down reflex, which may lead to early weaning.
  • Recommendation: Ideally, the best recommendation is counsel the mother to quit smoking. If the mother is unwilling to stop smoking she should delay nursing as long as possible after smoking a cigarette. Encourage the mother to smoke away from the infant, preferably in another room or outside of the house.

happy breastfeeding ladies!
