  • The first thing I would do is try to associate the potty with good things.  If he doesn't want to sit on the potty or starts screaming, crying, etc., don't make him sit there.  Make it a fun experience.  For example, while he's sitting there, try reading to him or singing a song to make it a better experience.  Also, when he does something, point out what he's doing WHILE he's doing it and then praise him...do a dance, clap, etc.  That'll make it so he understands what you want him to do and is able to associate the sensations he's feeling with what he's doing.  Also keep in mind that the muscles that control these functions don't fully develop until 18-24 months old.  Are you using a potty seat or the toilet in your bathroom?

As far as daycare goes, I'd explain to them what you're doing at home and encourage them to try this as well...again, if he doesn't want to sit on the potty, don't make him because it'll give the potty a negative connotation to him.  I nanny during the day from 9AM to 2PM and my DD comes with me.  We keep a potty seat at home and one where I work so I can reinforce it there as well.

Also remember that Rome wasn't built in a day...it's going to take time to potty train.  Good luck!
