Hello,
Im new to this group. Just became a member today. I am currious, at what age is too young to start potty training. I know some people start potty training babies, i mean younger than my son. My son is just Five and a Half months old. I figured, once he started walking, I'd start potty training him. But should I start now, later, when. I dont want to have a little boy, walking around in a poopy diaper. I babysitt and hate when the kids i watch do that. It causes their diaper rash, having to poop their pants. I mean, I've discussed potty training with their parents before, they're okay with the idea but if im the only one doing it...than its not going to sink into their heads. (the one little girl I watch now, is 1 1/2 years old.) Is that too young??? See i dont know. I just feel so bad when the kids walk around with a messy diaper, I always change them right after they do poop their diapers, simply because of my OCD on it sitting in their pants...I dont know how else to explain it. I just dont want to push the issue of potty training too early on any child. Now I was (about a year ago now) watching a 4 year old. He was not potty trained, I (the babysitter) had to do it. && at home, they were working with him after they took him home, but not over night....over night they put a pull up on him - and just let him soil himself. I feel (if you're going to potty train) you cant just 'train' children durring the day, you must be persistant and do it at night as well....Now i also believe that a four year old, wetting and pooping them selves is a little wrong if you ask me. He was in pre-school. and he was the only one, not potty trained. So ---- i want to know YOUR views on potty training, what age you believe is too young, too old, and any suggestions as to when I should and how I should start potty training my son? Pointers on potty training will be awesome!
Thanks for reading!!! :::: Sincerely, :::: Mrs. Chapman
It's never to early to start. I started my daughter at 3 months old, and she's now 2 and fully potty trained. She was mostly trained before she turned 2, but still had accidents. Now she's really good, and just wears pull ups at night when she sleeps. I also have a son who's 18 months, and he's a bit slower, but I've been putting him on the potty regularly to to get him used to it.
If you want to start young, you just have to be consistant and make it fun. I noticed once you scold them for making an accident, it just sets the process back, not forward. We did a sticker chart for a little while, and that helped, then she outgrew it, but id did help.
Cloth diapering, BFing, spanking country mom of 2.

I share the same opinion as you. I really hate to see kids walking around in dirty dippers, and I have seen plenty even after the can talk!!!!!!! It's horrible. I have a 7 month old and I have no idea of how to potty train him. I also like to start once he walks which at the rate he is going it shouldn't take more than 2 months, but honestly I don't know how, since I live with my in-laws and they don't have ceramic or wood floors. It's nothing but carpet and I'm not sure if they would like the idea of my baby having accidents on their carpet. Hopefully more help will be given by more experienced moms.
I started at birth and by 5 months my daughter was only wearing diapers in some public places.. and not at all by 7 months.
i have a four yr old that we waited until she turned two to potty train. my youngest is 19 months and will set on her potty now. if u have a older child for them to watch then that helps. i think four with a diaper is way to old. i think that babies r to young
To the poster who lives with her in-laws: I live with my parents in their fully carpeted home, so I understand! You don't have to go diaperless. We used cloth diapers and now that she is 24 lbs the small training pants fit pretty good! We have some of the Gerber padded panties so you know as soon as they go but it doesn;t run out. I ordered some waterproof ones from www.babybestbuy.com for only 1.25 each, and they are waterproof! They are just so much easier to get on and off! I didn't start til my dd turned one, 2 weeks ago. If i have her in the pull-ons and I make it a point to take her to the potty as soon as she wakes up and then every 1.5 hours, she won't have any wet accidents! but poops are another story! I wish I would have started sooner because I'm having a hard time picking up on any cues because she's always on the move! So for now I guess it's elimination prediction?
