I made a double batch this last night the plan was to have it for dinner and to can up the rest..it was so good there only one bowl left.. my family devoured it.
Here is the recipe..
Split Pea Soup Recipe
- 1 lb (2 1/4 cups) green split peas
- 1 large onion, peeled and chopped
- 2 celery stalks, chopped
- 2 large carrot, chopped
- 3 oz of real bacon bits
- Salt and Pepper to taste
I appologize but I never really measure when adding spices but I will guess at how much I put in
2 tsp thyme, 2 tbs soduim free chicken broth and 2 tsp garlic powder and lots of pepper.
1 Pick over the peas and remove any stones. Wash and drain peas. Place in a large sauce pan pan and 4 1/2 quarts of water. Bring to a boil Skim the scum off the top of the soup for several minutes, until the scum ceases to rise. boil about 3-4 hours, or until peas are tender, stirring occasionally in case they stick to the bottom of the pan.
sautee' carrots, onion and celery in butter until tender and add to soup
2 Add spices, salt and pepper to taste. serve with corn bread or crackers
