About Autism/Asperger's - When do we tell them? For moms with kids in Elementary school

If you are a parent, a child, friend or family of a child with Autism/Asperger's you can help us inform each other what it is really like to live with Autism everyday. , My child recently celebrated his birthday and I am finding it very hard to find the words to tell him exactly what Autism means. I know the time is coming soon to educate him and prepare him for the situations that are sure to come his way.

The current behaviors that we are dealing with, is free play with others. He seems to always hurt another child because he does not have the social skills of the other 7 year olds in his class. I created this blog to get help for me and maybe help others. It can drive you crazy coming up this the perfect thing to say without adding toooooo much information.
To be a part of this group, all you need to do is be willing to share information about the kinds of thing that you deal with on a daily bases. Some times thing are funny. Some times, they are too much to handle alone. We all want the best for our children.
Please keep it kind and real. This is not the place to tell someone that they are doing it wrong – I don’t think people reach out for help- just to be blown away with a response that is not supportive. We live this everyday. From the moment we wake up to the sec. we go to bed. Autism – lives on your minds. For me, I find myself in my room at night worry about things like the school field trip that is coming up, the musical performance. I think about whether my child will stand out.
. We need moms that are willing to help other moms. Please, keep it kind and real.
If you chose to, there is a web site called “Behind A Closed Door” a project dedicated for moms and kids. You can find it at www.behindacloseddoor.com It is independent from the blog. You may fine it helpful and fun.
