How do I get rid of cypress tree roots in my yard?

I live extremely close to my neighbor and they have a Cypress tree that has invaded my yard with it's root system, there are nobs and knees popping up all over...and worse when it's wet out. How can I get rid of them without killing their tree?

Do you have roots or knees?  The roots run along the soil but the knees sit up like ant hills.
See the knees in front of the trees.

Both, when I dig in my yard I'm always finding them running underground, and I have knees that sit above ground. My husband says we should just take an axe to them and try to dig them up? What do you think?

Yeah that's pretty much what I've heard so far...get rid of the tree and the knees will go to. I liked learning that it might not hurt the tree :) Thanks for all your help. For now I'm thinking of planting a low laying ground cover that flowers around them so we don't mess up the mower, at least until I'm ready to rip up all the grass to cut these things...that will be a chore!
