Hi Moms!  Some background first - last June my son began clearing his throat pretty suddenly and regularly after coming down with Parvo Virus.  I was so worried that I put him through all the allergy tests, quite a few different doctor appts, well, basically we did all the tests and everything pointed towards it being just a passing tic, probably transient.  It lasted through October and went away.  A few weeks ago, he started it up again and has been going at it pretty constantly, almost to the point that I wonder if it will go away again.  It's been a year so I figured it was just a passing thing - guess that was wishful thinking.  A couple months back, I had him at the dentist.  The dentist asked me if my son has had "problems with his throat" or trouble breathing because he noticed that he has unusually large tonsils for a child his age.  I really didn't think much of it at the time because I didn't put 2 and 2 together.  Here is my question - have any of you ever had a doc or dentist ask you this before and do you think I have something related to the throat clearing?  I have an appt next week with his doc for his annual check and I think I may have her check out his tonsils.  I really hate to draw attention to it because any attention seems to make the throat clearing worse but it seems to make sense?   The reason I bring this to you all is because perhaps if your child is also clearing the throat and this is the only tic they are experiencing - you may want to have the tonsils looked at too!  Really, I could also use some reassurance right now that this will REALLY go away again.  Glad to have some help here as my husband really doesn't want to hear me! :)

  •  it possibly could pe part of the problem.

my oldest was told that her tonsils were 'really big' for years and she suffered from lots of strep throat too.  She had hers out about 2 years ago now.

my youngest (with the eye tics).......just recently on a wellness visit was told that her tonsils were 'very large' for such a little girl. so i imagine eventually she will start to have problems with them too.

i also have HUGE tonsils and always feel like i'm not getting things past them well.......so truely he might not even be ticcing.......his tonsils could be blocking off his throat a bit.

  • Thank you for your response, it's good to talk to someone about what possibilities are out there.  Hearing your words makes me even more curious about the tonsils and perhaps the airway is somewhat blocked!  When he runs hard, it gets worse.  Maybe this is the way tics like this go?  Sometimes I think I'm the only one trying to find answers rather than just "waiting to see if it goes away".  I don't know about anyone else, but my otherwise supportive husband thinks I am absolutely nuts for worrying about it so much, and maybe I am.  How are your husbands?  Bottom line is, no matter what ends up happening, I just can't stand watching my little boy go through something that is obviously so bothersome to him too.  And, I don't like other people looking at him like there is something wrong with him.  It's sad and my heart aches for him.  So, here I am again - worried, curious and sad.  His throat must just be raw from clearing it so much, poor little guy....

i think I'm definitely the worrier...and my hubby is the calm in the storm guy................he sees meggies 'eye blinkies' (as we now call them)......and figures............"oh well nobodys perfect"...........me i look for answers, solutions, info whatever............i get mad alot that he doesn't seem to care this is happening........but he does.......he just doesn't expect perfect.  Me, i guess i Want perfect sometimes.....I know it's not possible......but like i said i'm a worrier by nature.

  • I would have the look at the tonsils and see what he thinks. My son has always slightly enlarged tonsils, but not to the point where they needed to come out. If they need to come out then get it done and see what happens.

My sons first tic was blinking his eyes constantly. If the throat clearing does not go away then ask the doctor about TS and see where it goes. Has he had any other tic like behaviour? The doctor is going to want to know. Movement tics are usually a give away to TS, but kids are supposed to have both for at least a year before any TS diagnosis.

Good Luck and let us know how it turns out.
