I have TERRIBLE vision, so any ideas appreciated!! (And we can't afford to update countertops or appliances, so paint is what I'm left with..hehe)

I was thinking of painting the cabinets black, terra cotta walls (maybe plum if I want my husband to divorce me..), and green-themed tiled backsplash..or maybe paint walls and cabinets all white (though I hate white, more of an earthy person..)

Any ideas or thoughts??

Your first idea is good!  Go with a flat black and distress it a little, kinda shabby-chic.  But go for a spicier version of terra-cotta, more like a rich pumpkin spice.  And opt out on back-splash for a while until you're sure of the style you want to go with.  Just add some pretty under cabinet lighting and pick your style!  Do ya like Tuscan? Or maybe a French Country?  Look at LOTS of pics and see what style you like best. Then add backsplash at the very end so there's no conflict.

I found this and thought it might help with your color ideas

Just remember if there is little light coming in and it is a small kitchen black/dark colors will make it seem smaller and very dark....  I would go with a green/distressed look and then maybe a grey stone look backsplash....  jmo lol

this is hilarious...our kitchens are almost exactly the same...I have the same "white wash " cabinets...I hated them...then I cleaned them, and they look good! I painted the walls "pine needle" which is a darker green than what you currently have! It makes the cabinets pop...the difference with my kitchen is that I have an island area coming off the end cabinets, and I also have a cream colored counter top! We just moved here, and will be updating the kitchen eventually, but for now, I like my kitchen.

I used Palm trees as my "theme" if you will!

Good Luck...add me as a friend, I will try to show you pics of my kitchen!

new to the group, but am also looking to redo my kitchen... I'm loving the idea of doing this barn red on the cabinets- so thanks for the inspiration!!

I would go with a darker grayish green on the walls, and a reddish brown on the cabinets.

I think black cabinets could look nice. I'm not sure if anything in the orange family is a great idea. If you do it, I bet a lot of people will be mentioning Halloween to you all year round. ;)

I have been envisioning a grayish blue color on the walls w/ black cabinets plus red and cream as accent colors (wall art, rugs, etc.)

I can't tell what color the counters are but if they don't match the new wall color, they sell a paint for counters you could use to change them to a better color.

I like the distressed shabby chic look, but I think that you have to have a really nice house to pull it off. If your house is a little drab/cluttered/undecorated looking, than the shabby chic looks more shabby than chic. (I have a friend, and I love her...but up until a year ago she was so busy w/ work and kids that she hadn't spent the time she needed to decorate her house and organize her home to avoid clutter. Some of her very nice stuff (like a cute vintage velvet pink couch and a big distressed chest) just looked like it added to the look of disarray in her home at the time. Now that she is less busy, and has pulled it all together, her house looks super cute. It has a beach cottage feel to it.)
