Painting question

I have a old door that has real old varnish on it from way back 1930's. Do I have to sand before I paint it or can I paint it with primer and then paint it?

I am not for certain here..... although I would say that you should sand it.  It will provide it a smoother surface to paint on.... and your finish will come out nicer
