Ok we recently moved to a new city. We now live in a town house. The living room is smaller than what we had before. We also no longer have a fireplace. I really missed my old vintage 1940's fireplace back home. I set out to make myself a fireplace! Yes renters can have anything you want in your home if you use your imagination! I really love the challenge, makes things fun ya know?! I was at a thrift store recently, & I saw a mirror for $5.00 & the idea hit me. I set out to transform it into a temporary fireplace. Everyone was laughing at me. There's no way you can make that a fireplace, they said. I was like "watch me". It was the prefect size for my small living space. Not to big, not to small. I went to the Home Depot and bought some trim to build up the top for height and to hide the ugly screws of the top of the mirror as you can see below. I also added the squareornate corners in tribute to my old 1940's fireplace that had the same look. With white paint this was a snap! I kept the mirror. I only out lined it with peel & stick title that cost only .69 cents a sheet. This was a simple, easy & frugal afternoon project. I say if you want something, make it happen. You do not need any DIY skills or lots of $$ to make your house a home! I thought about revamping it by taking out the shelves and building sides but as I looked at it I thought it would be great to keep them for decor! That's the unique thing, my fireplace can be like no other, it's one of a kind.
Keeping part of the mirror showing accomplished two things. I helped to make my room look a bit bigger and it makes the candles amplified! Six candles look like 12! To also aid in making the room look bigger I hung a mirror that I re-did a few years ago above the mantel. I use scentless tea light candles so it does not harm my families sinuses. I decorated it simple for Spring. I love the bright green apples with the flowers & birds. I already had everything on hand but the apples. I got the apples from the Dollar Tree. I went to Micheal's and for a dollar got an oval wooden frame. I painted it white, added scrapping paper and mounted my white wooden bird I painted to make a cute Spring accent!
Now when I come down the stairs it's starting to look like home around here. The queen of cheap has done it again!
