My friend just had her baby this past Tuesday (Yay!!!) Anywho... the baby had jaundice and has been going to the hospital everyday for testing. My friend chose to breastfeed and wants to smoke, but doesn't know if it will show up in her baby's blood. So, I come to you guys =] The baby has to have her heels pricked and the blood tested everyday for the jaundice, so... will the THC be transfered to the baby's blood through breastmilk?

My daughter had the same thing and I was worried about that too so I just waited till she didn't need to be tested anymore which was only like a week.

they don't (usually - I've never heard of it at least) test for MJ during the testing for billiruben (sp?) level.

yeah, if they're doing the foot prick for jaundice testing, they're not getting enough to test for any drugs. lots of babies are born jaundiced, so it's not a cause for them to be concerned about drug use. i'd say your friend is good to go, and to put the baby in the sunlight for a few minutes at a time to help get rid of it, and to NOT give her baby formula if they tell her it will help! that right there ruined my attempts at breastfeeding my first daughter, and it was abotu 4 months until i could get her off formula and on BM only. total nipple confusion and latching issues and pain- OH MY!- so not worth it!

congrats to your friend's new addition and thank you for helping your friend out!

its only 0.8 thc level and we are born with .6 so no worries as long as you arent smoking all day everyday. just tell her to read what paper work she is signing always.

I was worried about this too but so long as she reads what she signs and doesn't smoke right before she takes her in I'm betting she will be fine! My LO is 2 months and I smoked for all but the last 2 months of my pregnancy and then waited until I knew she was gaining well to smoke..

yep. my pedi told me that. it was with my first, so i was very uninformed. the formula constipated her- jaundice exits the body (or rather the stuff that causes jaundice) through the poop. so my theory is that she didn't get un-jaundiced cos she was constipated and that stuff sat in her body longer, plus she had nipple confusion and horrible latching so she was getting more formula than BM. with my second, i decided i would NOT be using formula if she was jaundiced too. guess what? her levels were just about the same as my first, and she got NO formula, and she was home free from jaundice by the time we cmae home- didn't need the bili lights liek her big sister. i had done a littel reading up on jaundice before she was born, and found nothing that convinced me formula would help get rid of jaundice. i wasn't going to let anything get in my way of having a successful start to breastfeeding.
