Just Curious

I've always wondered how airlines get away with serving peanuts. The air is filtered but what if a person seated near you opts for the peanuts instead of the pretzels (I guess I'm thinking Southwest because this is what they serve). I would think that is enough for someone with severe allergies to have problems.

How do you handle this?

Thanks in advance.

We flew with our son last year.  We knew he had an allergy so we cleaned his armrests and table with wipes to remove any possible residue.  Thankfully we took up the entire row so I didn't have to worry about anyone sitting next to us having nuts.

Most don't serve anything but Southwest still serves nuts and everytime I fly I've wondered how they can justify it.

Actually you can tell the agent at Southwest about the peanut allergy and they won't serve peanuts.  At United when making reservations you can check disability and say food allergies/peanut and you can then preboard to wipe down handles/trays, etc...  United doesn't serve peanuts.  According to Dr. Wood at John's Hopkins in Baltimore, MD the incidence of an allergic reaction from people opening the packages is low, the air is extrememly filtered however for all peanut allergic the possibility of cross contact from touching surfaces is a bigger risk since people not only eat peanuts but they bring food onboard and some may contain peanuts.  It is good to bring wipes to wipe down everything and seat your child near the window with you in the middle to be the 'barrier' between your child and anyone eating nuts.

If you tell southwest someone has a peanut allergy theu pull the peanuts from the flight. Id still wipe things down because the residue or a random peanut could be in the seat

Thanks fore the info. You answered my question. I saw on the Doctors the other day that the airplanes are so dirty everyone should be wiping down the seats, trays, handrests...absolutely everything. Some companies are selling seat covers you can put on the seat to protect yourself from anything that might be living in them...i.e. bed bugs.
