Missing School

My son has had to go the doctor a lot so we can find out what is wrong with his eye. Because of this he has missed days of schools. He is going to miss this Friday and he really wants to go because they have a field trip.  I feel bad that he is not able to go and be with his friends.  Kindergarten is supposed to be fun, but how fun can it be if you have to keep going to the doctors.

Im not sure if you child goes to all day or not. If he goes in the am try to get an afternoon most Dr.'s will work around school kids. If you have pm kindergarten go in the morning. If he continues to miss school he will start to fall behind and let me tell you my son is in 2nd and he cant really miss a day or he will fall behind. They move at a different pace than when we were in school! LOL And I know in Ohio they REALLY dont want the kids to miss a lot.

You could try to schedule the appointments on the same day of the week every time he has to go( maybe Mondays or Tuesdays) and always try to get the latest appointment available.  I hope the doctors figure out what is wrong and soon...my 7yo dd has amblyopia ( her eye turns in really far without glasses) and she has an instigmatism which means that her eyes constantly jump.  Oh and if he has to get glasses get the ones that are bendable, they are a little more expensive but in the long run they will save you money.

I HOPE EVERYTHING GOES WELL AND HE'S ABLE TO GO ON HIS FIELD TRIPS.

Your sons eye care is top priority, but at the same time take a stand with the doctors so he can miss the minimal amount of school.  And as one of the other posters suggested, make it late in the day or first thing in the morning and get him to school a portion of the day.  K is 1st & 2nd level of when I was in school.  So missing is a big deal, even for the social connection side.  Be his advocate in a big way when it comes to dealing with the doctors and how they schedule.  It may mean switching doctors if they aren't willing to work with you.  My prayers go out to you as you stand firm and do what is best for your son and his health!

I forgot to state that I would definately reschedule the appointment on Friday so he DOESN'T miss the field trip. Even if you would have to pick him up at the field trip location after the tour, etc. and take him to the doctors appointment. Mom's go a lot of extra miles and the blessings here and later will be worth it all!

That stinks for you both.  Talk to the Dr's your seeing - if there is anything they can do to minimize impacting his educational time, that would be great.  Some will do early appointments (like 7:30am) and some will do weekends - but you do have to ask.

Good luck!

did you mean Astigmatism, a common condition where the cornea is not perfectly spherical?

Schedule his appointments around his school schedule as much as possible. Here our schools get really nasty about kids missing too much school even if it is for a Dr appointment.

No I meant an instigmatism, it may not be spelled right but thats what it is.  I ask her doctor every time we go to make sure that its not an astigmatism and he says no its an instigmatism...it makes her eyes jump constantly.

Thank you for all your comments, but he had miss his Kindergarten field last Friday. He had to go to the hospital for an MRI.  Latley he has been seeing specialist and they don't open on the weekend.  But we are going to make it through all of this.
