A week or so ago I saw a post with a website for helping with spelling.  I am not sure if it was in this group or not.  Does anyone know any sites that help with spelling.  My daughter is having a rough time with it and I was hopeing to make it fun by maybe useing the computer.

Thanks

Renee

  • We use http://www.spellingcity.com/ there are 3 different ways to learn. My daughter's 5th grade classroom also uses it.

  • I'm not a teacher, but we've seemed to master the spelling which DS has been horrible with until this year. We don't use any computer programs nor do we use a tutor.

Right now DS gets 10 words a week. He brings his list home on Monday and the test is on Friday. So we start on Monday night... here is our routine:

Monday: He concentrates on writing and reading the words. He has to know how to read them before he will learn how to spell them. I find that writing them out helps give him a good visual of the words and an understanding of how the letters work together.

Tuesday: He writes out all the words, reads (says) the word, spells it when looking at it, and then says the word again. We do this at least 3 times as it combines what we did the night before (sort of like review) and saying the word and letters helps to reinforce that visual. Also, by now I know he knows how to read the word.

Wednesday: We review a couple of times using the techniques above and then we quiz him by saying the word aloud and having him write it out without using his list. Based on that quiz we know which words he is still having trouble with and focus on those that night.

Thursday: By now he knows all of his words and we quiz him about 3-4 times in the night

Friday morning: On the way to school I'll have him spell his words aloud.

So far this year he has only missed *1* word...

Also, we reward him. He has a math challenge 2 times  a week and if he can improve on that as well as get 100% on his spelling test every week, we take him to Walmart for a Hotwheel or a small toy. Sometimes we'll let him decide where he wants to eat dinner out that night. It's great because he looks forward to Friday so much that he works so hard on his words and math challenge.

    Good luck!

  • I am an elementary teacher and we actually use the starfall site at my school.  I think that would help.  Also, repetition is just a good way to learn the words.  Just go over and over and lots of practice.  Good luck!
