My daugher is in 5th grade, and says almost everyone in her class has a cell phone except for her. Her school is right next door to our house, and I work part-time, so I'm home when they get out of school. I don't think she needs one yet, and honestly would rather hold off (money wise) until it's needed - probably when she goes to middle school. Is she really one of the last 5th graders without a phone??? My brother (who has no kids) made me feel guilty by saying "don't forget about the status factor - I remember going to school in hand me downs and feeling like a loser." I think that's different. My girls always look presentable, just don't have all the gadgets of today - like cell phones, and tv's in their rooms, etc. Am I living in the stone age??
I'm the wrong person to ask... my 8 year old daughter has a cell phone.
And let the bashing begin.
I am a Private School sending, Vaccinating, Non spanking, Nightmare Cuddling, Dessert Giving, Homework Helping, Bedtime Kissing, Book Reading, Academic pushing Mum. I believe in the benefit of organized after school activities. I believe in spoiling my children. I believe that I have seen the village and I do not want it raising my child - I will do that, Thank You. I believe that a woman's place is in the home taking care of her house, children and husband. I am submissive and proud, my husband is head of my home. I am a proud, traditional Roman Catholic, as is my husband... Yes we are teaching our children that The Church is the only Church. Aimee
My 5th grader has a cell phone. It's prepaid,so the money factor isn't really an issue.I do understand your point on why your DD doesn't need one at this point. We got DS his cell because he was playing football.
My son is 10 and in the 5th grade and he does not one. I tell him he does not even talk on the house phone why does he need a cell phone ?

I dont do cell phones for my dd and I wont for any of my three kids until 15-16yrs of age, unless something comes up in middle school that warrants them.

When SD was 11,we got her a prepaid cell. She quickly learned that when she was out of minutes, she couldn't use her phone.
Along comes BM,thinking she's smart & going to "one-up" us & got SD a cell on her plan.Boy,she sure showed us!!Her very first month's bill was well over 600 dollars!!LMAO.Guess that's what happens when you don't have enough common sense to explain proper phone usage to a child!!

I know many teenagers that don't have one ..including the 2 that live here! And if you do get one I'd go with a pre-paid phone because I've heard of kids wracking up like $800 phone bills!
mine arent getting one until they can afford it themselves or if there is some reason why their dad and i arent taking them to and from sports, activities, etc where they would need one. most of their activities are after DH is off of work and right now I work parttime so there are no issues. mine are 6+8 1/2 right now. we dont plan on getting them one ever.
SD the 8 1/2 yr old has one at her moms house, but when she brings it here it gets shut off and put on a cabinet until she goes back to her moms. shes not allowed to use it at my house and im not paying the bill for the damn thing. I told her mother she was too young because she is never not with an adult who could call and that it wouldnt be allowed at our house before she bought it. DH and I dont even have cell phones why would are children.

DS will be 9 next week. He's not around other children with cell phones because I homeschooled him & none of the home schooled children he's around are allowed them either. He has asked for 1 simply because he wanted to play the little fighter pilot game that is on one of my pre-paids & so he could have a camera. Well I settled that by giving him the old pre-paid I no longer use & gave him my old digital camera when I bought a new one. So I fixed both problems & he still doesn't have a cell phone & won't be getting one till he's old enough to be out and about with friends & then it will only be a pre-paid & only to be used for me to reach him or vice versa.
