My son is very behind in reading It's been a struggle to get him to do his required 15 minutes of reading every night. We do bedtime stories every night and he has actually created his own little reading game. He has a Spongebob Squarepants joke book. He has me read the joke and he tries to "guess" the right answer by reading the book over my shoulder. So, he's getting in his 15 minutes of practice every night now, no muss no fuss. Tonight I mixed it up by reading the questions randomly rather than in the order they appear in the book. So, he has to read both the question and the answer.
I'm super excited that we stumbled upon something that makes getting in his daily reading time painless AND fun.
Another trick we use is having my boys look up a recipe online. On Friday nights, if they can read the recipe and the directions to me, we make whatever dessert they want. That is assuming we have the ingredients required.
What works for you to get your kiddos to do their school work every night?

Have them read in magazines and newspapers about stories that interest them. Read Directions of a game before they play. Set up a reward system if they read certain amount they get to choose an activity to do.
The only way I would let my kids "stay up late" is if they want to read a book or part of a book. It would give them an extra half hour to stay up.
