Do you allow your kids to ride ATV's, go-carts, etc?
How do you feel about your kids riding on gas powered toys? Is there a certain age that you'd be more comfortable with it? Give me your thoughts on these.

This is my oldest son tearing up the back yard in his racing go-cart. He got it for his 7 birthday, about 2.5 years ago and he loves it. Obviously he wears a helmet all the time and I make him do work around the yard to pay for his gas, because in the real world if you have no cash you get no gas. lol My son wants to be a Nascar driver and this is how he practices. He is actually a better driver than I am, he has very good hands and reflexes.
I have no problem with kids on atv and the like, but I think that they need to be mature enough to handle it and follow all the safety rules. After all some of these things are as powerful as a small car, so they can get hurt if they aren't being careful.
My kids are 3 & 5. I have no problem letting them ride w/ someone I trust & know is extremely careful. They have been riding 4wheelers since they were just a few months old. We're country people....so its normal to us.
For Christmas my dad & stepmom got them & her other 2 grandkids (the same age as mine) a powerwheel like (I don't know the brand name) 4wheeler. My girls are learning to drive that & control the speed, but someone is always out there w/ them. That little thing is pretty fast. They won't be learning to drive the real thing for quite a few years, since all the ones we have around are for adults. However, my godson is about to be 4 and he & his older sister (9) have a smaller 4wheeler they drive/ride.
We dont own them-but family in IN do, and since the kids were each 3yrs old they have been on them with family or not. They are now 6, 8 and 11.
We don't have anything like that for our 10 yo, but it's more lack of space around our house and not having a truck (and other funds) than thinking anything negative against parents that do. Any sport can be dangerous, and so just providing the proper tools, safety and education beforehand plus making sure the child is responsible enough is all that's needed in my opinion.
As long as there is safety equipment and responsible people taking all the precausions that need to be taken I'm okay with it...now would I allow my 1 year old to ride with someone? No...but I have a 7 year old! lol
My nephew had his own 4 wheeler when he turned 2 and he had a helmet and everything but I think they should be at least 4 or 5...
Like you said, if kids are responsible and coordinated enough and they understand the safety rules and regulations that MUST be followed, then I have no problems. It does make me angry and upset to see people who allow their kids to ride and do these things with no helmets or allow them to just be reckless. It looks to me like your son gets it and you are a responsible and careful parent.
Yes, I let mine ride but only with me unless it is the power wheels type then they can ride by themselves but they are still riding w/helmets and being watched. As you see from my profile pic...my boys and I were riding a snowmobile last month. We had a blast and everyone had on helmets.
My family has a huge farm and all the grandkids rode them...we had some pretty nasty accidents (motorcycle and three-wheeler) that did some damage to my cousins but that was before safety precautions were common. Now that all of us have kids we are much more cautious but still let them ride. All the great-grandkids are still too young to ride alone so the adults still drive them. When my boys are old enough to drive on their own I will still be right there with them on my own ATV. I know the dumb things I did when I was growing up and won't give them the opportunity to do the same...
I think riding ATVs helped me be a better driver so I think it is great practice but it should be supervised in my opinion...
My son has had an ATV since he was about 7. He is 9 now. He always wears a helmet and he rides at his grandparents house. My mom has 2.5 acres and my SO parents have about 15 acres that he is allowed to ride on. He loves it and I would not deny him of riding it.
Great pic!! Looks like he is having fun

I think 1 or 2 is a little to young for them. I waited until my son was 7.
