Do you eat with your kids?

I just wanted to voice that I do not like school lunch!  I just went and had lunch with my kids. I found that 2 of them did not eat lunch at all.  The food was disgusting.  The french fries were half cooked greasy hard and cold.  The burger did not look like meat.  My teenager never eats either.  I apologize for complaining, but it is so important that they eat.

I noticed a huge amount of parents eating with their kids.  One family had hot and cold thermos with food cooked from home.  Some brought pizza and salad.

My daughters best friend always packs a healthy lunch like salad, cheese, yogurt, fruit.  I could kick myself for assuming they were eating well.

How often do you eat lunch with your children and do you bring them food?

What steps would you take to change the quality of the school lunch?

I've always HATED cafeteria food. Now that my 5yr old is in school, she brings her lunch. She gets a turkey & cheese sandwhich w/ a fruit cup or a PB& J w/ fruit. Sometimes I send her a salad (the teachers help w/ the dressing). I will never force my children to eat school food.

I know that some schools have made big changes to school lunch and that kids are being fed decent food.  Our schools are not on that list.  That being said, you cant pay me to eat that shit and im not feeding it to my kids either!

I only have one child who even has the option of eating school lunch this year (3 are homeschooled, one goes to a school that does not have a cafeteria).  My kids eat food from home every day.  My 14 year olds are homeschooled but have class, activites etc during the day about 4 days a week and they are gone during lunch those days so they pack lunch boxes in the morning as well.

I understand why its not possible to do away with school cafeterias, so i know this is not a particle solution but really I just think everyone should pack their kids good healthy food to take from home.

At our school parents are not permitted to eat lunch with their children, even if you are helping at the school for the day - they have a designated eating area for volunteers and staff.  Then again parent's aren't allowed in the building unless they have a reason to be there.  Our security is great.

Back to food.  My boys usually take food from home, it is much healthier and I ask them to bring their garbage home - this way I know for sure what they have eaten.

My SS loves school food. He know what he will and wont eat so we go over the menu together and if he says he doesn't like something on a certain day we send his lunch

I have to admit that our school food is pretty good!  I have eaten with my daughter a couple of times.  The school ask that if you eat lunch with them, to call ahead so you can be added to the lunch count for the day.  Unless you are bringing your lunch.  My daughter loves when I have lunch with her, then they go out for 15 minute recess after lunch.  I usually leave after recess.

My son knows how nasty school lunch is,  thank goodness,  and prefers to bring lunch from home.  Every once in a while he will buy,  but not often.  I do have lunch with him sometimes and not only can I NOT eat that stuff (I have celiac disease and I don't eat meat) I also WOULD NOT eat it,  because it is gross!  I pack my own food and eat there with him.  :)

If I could change the school lunches... hmmm...  Well,  first of all,  there would not be any meat "product" looking crap;  nuggets,  fish sticks,  country-fried whatever.....  Meat options would be lean and healthy choices like baked chicken or fish,  roasted meats,  etc.  There would be whole grain things,  healthy and appetizing veggies,  rice,  whole grain pastas..  a big salad bar with FRESH choices,  oh gosh,  there are just too many things I would change.  lol

My kids school lunches arent the greatest but have a salad bar every day, which my dd loves.  I dont eat with my kids at school very often, but occationally take them out for lunch.

I have never gone and eaten with him at school. He has always told me he likes the school lunch and believe me he would not be shy about telling me. Sometimes he will ask to bring a lunch. He has already said he wants to take on Monday.

I dont think we can eat with them either. I will have to ask Nathan when he comes home today. I know you have to have a valid reason and a photo ID to be in the building.

The schools lunch here are not that bad. Some days are better than others. In the elementary they have a couple months out of the year that you can go and eat lunch with your kids. We have gone a couple of times. For my ten year old he picks what days he want to eat school lunch. If they are serving something he doesn't like then we pack a lunch for him. Usually a sandwich-meat or pb&j, string cheese, fruit and sometimes we pack a drink or he gets milk from school.

My 13 yr old is another story. She is in middle school. She refuses to take a lunch to school when they are serving something she won't eat. Which is quite often, she is a very picky eater. She claims that her locker is too far away and then she won't have enough time to eat. I tried to encourage her to take her lunch with her to her class before lunch that way she won't have to go all the way back, of course that is not cool so she won't do it. I have compromised with her and often give her money for the al a carte items. At her school I can track what she purchased because she still has to enter her lunch code into the system.

The only thing off the top of my head for changes would be to have an alternative option for kids to eat for their main dish. Especially for kids who are picky eaters.
