....actually teach the parts of speech? I just don't see it being taught in the elementary schools that I work in. I think this is vital for good writing skills. It's a shame that students are missing out on this.

are meaning like noun, verb and so forth? those are parts of speech and my kids' school have always taught them...I am happy that their new private school uses the phonemic approach to spelling and reading rather than the whole word or chunking approach....

Our school covers this.  I thought it was essential.

Our school district teaches the parts of speech, but doesn't use the correct terms....like instead of verb they say action word....drives me nuts.  My kids hate when they have grammar homework b/c I make them name the words in the sentences.....so if they are looking for verbs and they point to a noun, I ask them what it is....when they tell me they have to write N above the word.

My 1st grader is getting phonics and will be learning parts of speech later this year. My 6th grader still gets grammar.

My boys began learning that in Kindergarten. And it has continued with each grade they enter.

Yes, my DD has been learning nouns, verbs, adjective, ect all along.  Oh wait I take it back, one school she attended for part of the school year did not teach it, luckly it was just a temp school beacuse we were in the middle of moving and had to rent short term while we were waiting on anothe place to open. Anyway, this school also failed all state standards and let the kids spell words how they felt they should be spelled, then complained when the kids spelt the words wrong.

the teacher should be using "action word" and "verb" interchangingly.  The way I tell my kids the difference between a noun or verb is a verb is an action and a noun a perosn place or thing. SO  I use action word only I guess to define the word verb
