Can your 5yo tie his/her shoes?

My 5yo is starting kindergarten this week and he can't tie his shoes. We've been trying to teach him for the last few weeks but he hasn't got it yet. He's usually really good with his hands. Are most 5yo able to tie their shoes? I had to break down and buy him a pair of velcro strapped shoes. BTW, he just turned 5 last month.

My son learned about that age, but he didn't really get good at it until we bought shoes that had laces and he had to tie them on a daily basis.  Usually making the two rabbit ears and then knotting them together is easier for most little kids.  Have you tried that way?

My oldest daughter learned when she was 4....but something clicked and it worked for her.

My twins are 4 and I haven't taught them yet only because they haven't had shoes.

I think 5-6 is average.

My daughter & son never really got how to tie shoes! My son has autism but my daughter does not. Inez is 18 and found these cool laces you twist not tie! Ant btw is 10

My 5 yr old does not know how to tie his shoes, yet. He just started kindergarten. Right now he has velcro shoes.

My older kids learned at some point during their kindergarten year. If I remember correctly, my dd learned it more quickly and did a better job than her older brother. Might be that girls have more fine motor coodination than boys thing.

I don't remember at what age my older kids started tying their shoes, but i think it was like in 1st grade. I have 5yo who also just turned 5,   2 months ago. She can't tie her shoes yet but i'm sure she'll get it soon enough. BTW my in-laws bought her some Tinkerbell Velcro shoes and she loves them.

My youngest ds just turned 5 in July and I haven't started trying to teach him yet.  I waited until my oldest was almost 6 because he had a hard time holding his pencil when writing and he is a lefty so that had it's own share of issues.  I will probably start working on it with my youngest over the next few months.

My son is 5 & just started kidergarten as well and he can't tie either. His dress shoes for his uniform are just slip ons so thats not a problem and his sneakers are velcro also. We've been working on it but I'm not pushing the issue. It'll happen eventually...something will just click one day LOL just like everything else. Don't stress!

Mine couldn't at age five.  I just bought them ones with the velcro so they could fasten them themselves and it wouldn't be a burden on the teacher.

My 9 yr old can barely tie shoes and his next pair of shoes will be in the men's sizes - no velcro there.  My 6 yr old can only tie the first knot.
