My dd does not have school tomorrow in observance of Rosh Hashanah. We recently moved to this area, Maryland. We have lived in , PA, TN, KY, TX & LA and the schools have never been closed for this holiday. Anybody elses kids out tomorrow ?

I live in MD and no school here.  We never had off for this when I was a kid, though.

I've never lived in an area where schools are closed in observance of Jewish (or any other religion's, for that matter) holidays.

I should also add that I think it's the respectable thing to do.  As a Christian, pretty much all of my holidays are observed on the school's calendar.  It only seems fair that others should be acknowledged as well.

I am in Los Angeles and my son's school is always closed.  Due to the budget cuts in California, my son hasn't even started school yet.  He begins on Monday.  They just waited until after the holiday since it's the same week as labor day and it would have been a short week anyway.  We live in a neighborhood with a lot of Jewish families (mine being one of them).  If the school wasn't closed, they would be missing at least 1/3 of each, class, a good chunk of the teachers and most of the administrators.

Christmas is observed as a "winter break" in most places, it also covers New Year's and any other non christian holiday that falls close to Christmas. Thanksgiving is more of a tradition and not a Christian holiday. Good Friday is observed but in some places it falls with Spring break, although not in my kids school. (it did when I was growin up). If you are not Christian and celebrate another Holiday that is not observed on the school calendar then they have to excuse the absence because they can not discriminate.
