I saw this posted in The Stir - What are your favorite Dr.Seuss books?

Guess whose birthday is today? Only the most famous, most fabulous children's author and illustrator of all time -- Dr. Seuss. Officially named Theodor Seuss Geisel, If he were still alive, he'd be 107!

I adore children's books. While I abhor piles of toys, I horde books for my children. Their multiple bookshelves overflow with all sorts of stories, tales, and rhymes. But over and over it's the work of Dr. Seuss that we reach for once the newness of the cartoon character books has worn off and the latest book order books have become a bit bland. My husband's parents saved all of his copies from when he was young and passed them on to us, so we have everything from vintage well-worn copies to brand new board book versions of Dr. Seuss safe for little hands. In short, Dr. Seuss rules, and we can't get enough.

It's a difficult task to narrow down the best, but there are some that stand out as the greatest of the great. Here are the five best Dr. Seuss books of all time:

1. Oh, the Places You'll Go

Such an inspirational tale that lets children (and adults) imagine all the possibilities in life. When my sister graduated from Vanderbilt a couple of years ago, they gave every student a copy.

Oh The Places You'll Go2. The Lorax

This wildly entertaining book also provides some strong warnings about our planet earth and ecological dangers. If only we'd listened to Dr. Seuss back then!

The Lorax

3. Green Eggs and Ham

A reference for parents of picky eaters everywhere, "You don't want to be a Sam I Am, do you?" Whip up some green eggs and ham of your own on Wednesday in celebration!

4. The Sneetches

This is one I didn't stumble across until later in life, but it's since become a favorite. It's another that's packed with a great message -- this one about accepting people as they are.

The Sneetches

5. The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins

Perhaps one of his lesser-known works, but one that explores the idea that just because someone is in charge, it doesn't mean they're right. Oh how many times we have seen that proven true since this book's publication!

Okay, weigh in -- what do you think are the greatest books by Dr. Seuss?

I don't have a favorite book. I don't really in all honesty care for Dr. Seuss.

My favorite is "How The Grinch Stole Christmas"...followed at a close second by "A Wocket in my Pocket" for sentimental reasons.  I read that to my kids all the time.
