Lunch with Dr Seuss

If you were sitting down at lunch, and Dr Suess walked in, would you invite him to sit down with you, and put you in a spin? Have a read of this...

I was sitting at the table, ordering chocolate mousse,
When who should walk in but the famous Doctor Seuss.

He sat down across from me and asked for a menu,
Then he turned to me and asked "What's the name of this venue?

"Why, it's Serendipity, of course!" I said with a smile.
I looked at him with great awe, and wondered for a while

This genius of a man was contemplating his pie.
I was too nervous to talk, so I straightened my tie.

Never before had the Doctor come back from the dead,
And all I could think of was the stories I had read.

The Butter Battle Book, Green Eggs and Ham.
He had inspired me so much, I used to call myself Sam.

So I worked up the nerve to start a conversation.
I asked how his trip was; Was he enjoying his vacation?

He answered me politely, every phrase in a rhyme.
Told me that everything went smoothly and that the roads had been just fine.

I had forgotten it was snowing, the drifts were four feet high.
I never realized it could effect his descent down from the sky.

My mousse was almost gone; it was so very yummy.
It had always been my favorite, as was evident by my tummy.

The eloquent Doctor seemed to have enjoyed his peach pie.
and he began to tell me stories, obviously not shy.

He flagged down the waiter and asked for some water,
He opened his wallet and there was his daughter.

There was a picture of her from when she was young,
It was during the summer and ahe was having so much fun.

She was playing in a sandbox at the local park,
And along came a dog who started to bark.

Well, little Miss Seuss as fearless as she was,
She barked right back at him as any girl does.

And that was his story, his fond memory.
He put back his wallet and glanced over at me.

"What's your story, young Miss? And why am I here?
What it is about my books that you hold so dear?"

"Well, Dr. Seuss," I began, looking down at my shoe,
"I love all your stories like Horton Hears a Who.

"The Sneeches, The Lorax, The Cat in the Hat,
They've taught me so much - can I ever forget that?

"You're brilliant, an artist, and a great poet, too.
Is it any wonder why I want to have dinner with you?"

The next course had arrived: frozen hot chocolate.
I reached for my book, There's a Wocket in my Pocket.

"Dr. Seuss, will you sign it, please, please, please, please?"
I was so excited with anticipation that I suddenly began to sneeze!

I grabbed my pen along with a tissue.
He signed his full name without making an issue.

We finished our meal and it was time to go home.
As he jumped in a taxi he handed me this poem:

'A little imagination can go a long way.
Have faith in yourself no matter what they may say.'

A crazy old man whose life was in rhyme
Inspired children to read one book at a time.

The poem that he wrote always stays with me.
Above all else imagination is the key.

Yum.  We're going to have that tomorrow night for dinner.  I haven't had it in so long that I'm looking forward to it.
