Drugs, alcohol, and other addictions?????

Posted by   + Show Post

What, if anything, do you teach your kids about addiction? Do you stick to the basics of drugs and alcohol or discuss other addictions such as food, gambling, sex, porn, and other things that can take over and consume a person?

My daughter is well aware of addiction.....not just drugs. She has a very disfunctional extended family (that I keep her away from). Her birth mother is an alcoholic/drug addict, several other family members are addicts (to drugs and/or alcohol), 1 aunty who has a major food addiction and is morbidly obese, even after gastric bypass surgery, 1 aunty who is annorexic.............etc. etc.

So, my daughter is educated on different forms of addiction (not so much porn or sex yet) and as she gets older and has questions, I answer them.

Unfortunately, my DD remembers my brother when he was addicted to drugs/alcohol and she has told me "I will NEVER act like Uncle J".  I plan to keep on talking to her (and my DS) about it. Next week is actually Red Ribbon week and she will have to pledge to be drug free.

Here's info about Red Ribbon Week incase someone asks: http://www.imdrugfree.com/

I explain everything! I go over it all!  And the ramifications of such behavior.  We go over this anywhere, wherever we happen to be. Like if we are out somewhere, and see someone panhandling, then watch them take the cash and go to the liquor store nearby and buy jack daniels or something..I explain the poor choice..he COULD have chosen to use that money for FOOD or a cupof coffeee, instead of buying liquor, which will just lead him to more poor choices.

I have been very frank about addiction with my two older kids, but J, who is seven wouldn't really understand addiciton.  I just say smoking and drugs are unhealthy and hurt you body and mind.  I have had to be frank with the other two because addiction runs in both sides of our family.  The results of family member's abuses have been destructive enough that I think a VERY stong warning is warranted.  My son is very much like his father, who has suffered with substance abuse for years.  We are not together, after seeing the destructive effect it was having on my self esteem and my children's as well.

i have talked with m 9 year old ALOT about addiction due to so many family members having addictions to various things (drugs, alcohol, food, cigerettes, etc.) we havent really touched on porn or sex addictions though i dont think hes quite ready for that but hes V ERY aware of the others from drugs to caffiene. However my 3 year old doesnt really grasp the idea of addiction its more cigerettes and beer are yucky type stuff.

I feel like my kids aren't old enough to need to address this. Maybe in a couple years.

I agreed but if he asked I would give him a answer that is suitable for his age.
