Homework times

Do you all have a specific time during the day the kids have to do homework? Is it right after school or do you allow them a little time to "decompression" after being in school all day? Before dinner or after?

It used to be right after school, but this year we are babysitting a girl from her class so they play until she leaves at about 6. Then its homework time while we cook dinner. Next year since we wont be babysitting again, or at least I hope we won't, it will go back to right after school.

Yup my daughter gets home from school at 16:15 We allow her to watch telly while I make dinner.

Dinner is at 17:00 so she gets nearly an hour before homework time.

My son is a 1st grader and gets out of school at 3:25.  He has two younger siblings.  I give them to 4:30 to play together.  Then he has to do his homework.  His homework consists of reading for 20 minutes.  If I let him do it after supper, it becomes a struggle because he's so tired.

Right after school.  Marie is in 2nd grade and if she waits, she'll complain about it, whine and moan and get easily frustrated with it.  She comes home, uses the bathroom (she ALWAYS hits the bathroom right after school, LOL) and sits at her desk to do homework.  THEN, she's allowed a small snack and to play.

My son does his homework as soon as he gets in the door from school.

I let my kids take control of when they do their homework. If we have something going on, I'll make suggestions, but ultimately it's up to them. A couple of times they've forgotten and completed it at breakfast the next morning. That stress usually puts them back on track for the semester, though.

They come home, get a snack, and start on homework.  Sometimes if they ask I will let them go outside and play for half and hour before, but that's it.  Generally, they have practice to get to after dinner and so they know to get moving.

When my son begins to get homework, which hopefully isn't until 1st grade, he will do it right after school. A snack and homework! Then, he can participate in activities, play, or whatever he wants the rest of the night. He will have house chores on Sat/Sun only.
