Outrage After School Tells Mom Her Child’s Lunch Is Unhealthy and Unacceptable

A mother is outraged after school officials told her 4-year-old daughter that her home-packed lunch was not healthy enough to eat. What was so unhealthy about her lunch? Trace Gallagher reported that a lunch inspector at the school told the girl she couldn’t eat her turkey sandwich, banana, potato chips and apple juice. Instead providing the girl with a USDA-approved lunch with the following guidelines: one serving of meat, one serving of grains, and two servings of fruit or vegetables.

When the girl returned home from school, her unopened lunch contained a note from the school saying that her lunch didn’t meet the guidelines and a $1.25 bill for the replacement lunch. The mom was outraged and anonymously wrote to the local newspaper and called a state representative. The North Carolina representative called the school which apologized, because in fact the lunch did meet all the USDA requirements.
In her statement to the newspaper, the mother argues that the issue isn’t whether the lunch meets any requirements but rather says, “Don’t tell my kid I’m not packing her lunchbox properly. I pack her lunchbox according to what she eats.”

So what do you think? Would you pay the bill? What would you do?

Wow. I would've been quite ticked off as well. They have no right to dictate what a Parent should pack in their Child's Lunch.

That would have pissed me right off for sure.  I wouldn't have paid the bill and I would have had a meeting with the cafeteria worker and the principal to resolve this matter asap.  I have no problem with schools banning things like soda, but the lunch described above is perfectly healthy.

I would be in the front office the next day! If they want to tell my child what to eat then they can pay all of her bills. If the don't want to pay all of her bills, then back off. Only it would not be said so nicely.

You can't tell me that a school lunch was any healthier. Those things are pretty crappy, in general.

Who are they to inspect the lunch to begin with and then say it's unhealthy? I'll be damned if they tell me how to feed my kids. It's got to stop. First it's the Happy Meals, now what we pack our kids for lunch? Mind your own business and let us raise our kids the way we want to raise them!

Crazy! I would be very mad! We all know cafeteria workers are experts in nutrition. Lol

Actually school lunches (and yes, even prison meals) are healthy, but that doesn't mean they taste good. They have to follow state guidelines and include all of the food groups.

I wouldn't go so far as to call them all healthy.  Not every state has the same guidelines for instutional meals.  Some leave a lot to be desired as far as nutrition goes.

I guess it could differ for different states. I know in Florida they follow state guidelines. My mom works for the county. And every elementary school serves the same lunches. There is one menu that is made by the county, not each school and they all follow it. Not sure about the junior highs and high schools. My son's high school actually has a fruit and salad bar that they put in after the vegetarian kids made a stink about it.

No I would not pay the bill I would tell that lunch inspector where he could shove it along with the guidelines. No one is going to tell me what my. Child needs to eat for lunch if I am packing it
