I know some people in the group do not like debates. But we like to try them every now and again. We ask that EVERYONE please be nice, no name calling or extreme language use toward others opinions. We all have our own thoughts and ideas on this subject. So let's just have fun with this debate. If you feel the need to quote another comment, please do not call that person names. If you disagree with them state your reason, but do not attack that person personally for their comment.

Do you feel that junk food( food that is high in calories but low in nutritional content, something that is appealing or enjoyable but of little or no real value. )should be banned in schools? That includes those packed in lunches, and shared during birthdays in the classroom.

I guess you should define "Junk" as everyone has a different view. French fries to some are a vegetable after all lol

I would say, kids need all the help they can get now days. That should mean healthy food. Kids dont need more crap.

Okay I defined what junk food is based on this site.

Nope I don't think America has the right to tell my kid what they can and cannot eat.

It's not my child's fault that some parents cannot keep their kids healthy.  My daughter eats healthy but I also let her indulge at times.

No, the school can choose to serve "healthy" meals but no one but the parent should decide what goes in a packed lunch.  I pack DD healthy lunches but every once in a while I throw in a mini chocolate bar or a piece of candy.....just my way of saying, "I was thinking of you".  I'd be more than ticked if the school wouldn't let her have her treat.

I don't have a problem with junk food in moderation.

I can see not allowing sweet treats to be brought in for individual birthdays, but I think totally banning them from class parties is taking a little extreme. I

The school has every right to not include "junk" in the lunches they serve, but no right to say that I cannot include one cookie or small piece of candy in my child's home-packed lunch. (With the exception of a life-threatening allergy in a schoolmate) I don't do it all the time, but I don't see the harm in sending a treat sometimes.

I don't think that they should be banned... but limited. Like if you bring in cookies or cupcakes for your kids for their b-day that would be ok.  Offer more healthy options for the kids, at our daughters middle school, they used to have a salad bar but now they no longer do.  The school should not let the "older" kids in the elementary schools give out the condiments like bbq sauce and ranch and ketchup... ( this happens at my daughters school) if the kids want these then they should be put into the plastic containers and they would only get 1!  Schools should also offer diff veggies some kids are allergic or just do not like certain veggies.  They should also offer water instead of milk, some kids cannot drink milk either allergic or just do not like it!!!   Sorry kinda went off on a rant there lol.

I wouldn't say banned, but I think it should be limited. I know a lot of kids like to celebrate their birthdays with cupcakes, but with 20 or so kids in a class, that's a lot of cupcakes during the school year. I think a parent should be able to send whatever they want in their child's lunch, because that is meant for their child only.

Our school does not allow treats brought in for birthdays, but they do for class parties. I like this policy.

I like that too. Our school has no bans but Elise's teacher last year said no "junk". She allowed cookies at parties but everything else was "healthy".
