I have an 8yr old d.d. who has always been...normal. She doesnt have any health concerns, isnt overweight, is growing like a weed, and has always been full of energy. She gets 9hrs of sleep at night, and its always been enough for her, but a couple weeks ago she came home from school complaining about a headache, and went right to bed. She was fine the next day, and returned to her normal sleep pattern. The next week, the same thing happened, and last Sunday she got a bad cold. Now she barely eats, and today she went right to sleep again as soon as she got home from school. I dont want to assume the worst. Could the cold be throwing her off? She doesnt usually sleep this much, and shes always had a healthy appetite. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It could be a cold.  What about her eyes?  I know a lot of kids that get headaches and ended up finding out they needed glasses.  Sometimes sleep makes the headache go away.

I would suggest calling her family doc and getting an appt scheduled to check her out just to be safe.

Does she has allergies. The pollen count has been real high here.

I don't know about the headaches but I know with mono, fatigue is a huge symptom.

I would get her into the her pediatrician.

My son get very sleepy during growth spurts. A cold can also really knock you for a loop...

Is this only once a week this is happening? Does she had gym on theses days?

I would get her in to see her doctor for a check up and some blood work to check her vitamin levels.

Is there any one you can get her to talk to

Sleep is often an escape - perhaps someone bullied or harassed her in some way and she needs to talk about it

For the headaches call your pediatrician and have her eyes checked. That's a huge instigator of headaches. The pedi can tell you the next step depending on how she tests.

For sleeping, she's probably going through a growth spurt - mine sleep a lot during growth spurts. Also if shes had an extra busy day that can be draining.

For the cough/cold do what you would normally do but bring it up to the pedi when you get her eyes checked just so its documented. Keep in mind it's also flu season.

Mono was my first thought, but it would be pretty consistent fatigue for that. Not once a week or so. Is she especially active at school on those days?

Bottom line, I would make an appointment with het pediatrician. Together the symptoms might be nothing, but separately they could indicate different problems. Headache could be eye issues, tiredness could be overexertion or a growth spurt or the cold. Best to get her checked out just in case.

First thought, have a talk with her about how she is feeling...."Is something bothering her"......"What other symptoms is she having?" open dialogue...find out some stuff.          Also, take precautions and take her to the doctor for a checkup and bloodwork. It could be a number of medical issues, too hard to specualate. So better to be safe than sorry. Good luck and hopefully things will get back on track.
