The school wants to hold back

 My first grader. She is 6 and excels in everything But reading. She can read but not very well, she is just slow. She is reading 16 words per min. They want her to be at 45 words per min.

 

I don't know what to do. The school said it was my choice.

If she is excelling otherwise, I would work on phonics and reading all summer and hope that she does ok in 2nd grade. (Have you had her tested for dyslexia?) The first couple of months is a lot of review of 1st grade skills.

Talk to you school psychologist about testing for learning disabilities b/c of her trouble grasping reading. She may read slower, but is she at an age appropriate reading level? Do you notice is she is having trouble sounding out words or transposing sounds? Is she having trouble with writing?

(My daughter is reading at a 2.7 AR level. Chapter books like Junie B Jones, Magic tree House and Rainbow Fairies is her level.)

I agree with above poster. The school can help you get her tested. Just ask the counselor or teacher for info. If she is ready in everything else then I would just try to strengthen the skills over summer. Also like pp said, they spend awhile refreshing on 1st grade stuff anyways. Does her school offer free tutoring? My dd had to do tutoring in 1st geade for her reading. I'm surprised the school hasn't done anything yet to help her.

I would look for a summer tutor. Ask her teacher if she knows of any teachers that do it over the summer. I also agree with testing but it may not happen till next year b/c it can take up to 60days to comply with testing.

I would not make the decision to hold her until the end of summer after working one on one with a tutor.

I would just keep reading with her, and see how she is doing and see if they can have her tested again before school is out. When my daughter was 4 i was told by her preschool teacher that she could be in Kindergarden, i should talk to the school and see to be considered for early kindergarden.  I did not do it because i knew it would be too much pressure on her at that young age!  I am glad I stuck with that :) She is 9 now in the 3rd grd and doing well :)

Don't hold her back.  Most kids even out in skill level with each other by third grade.

Don't hold her back especially if she is doing well in other areas!   I have a second-grader who never really took to reading until late this school year. I would buy her whatever she wanted to read and most of those books went unread until recently...something, I think, just "clicked" with her. Definitely provide high interest reading materials! I never thought I'd buy Spongebob books, but buy them I did!   Those cartoony "Bad Kitty" books I loathe?  Bought the whole set!  She's reading so much now that I've actually stopped buying books and have gotten to know our local library!  Read to her every night, have her pick out the words she knows and praise and encourage any reading she does!

I've heard that K-3 has students learning to read and after that they read to learn, so it's great to get on this early!

Does your school have a remediation program for kids who are struggling? A reading specialist? If not, there should be a person at the district level (if not in your daughter's school) who can do the assessments to see if there is physical impairment, learning disability, etc. Usually this will be through special ed and should be a free service. You could also ask her teacher is she knows who exactly you should contact.

My experience is that it'll take awhile to find the right person to answer your questions. Once you do find the right person, they might have ideas and materials that you can work on with your daughter over the summer, too! If you're having trouble tracking someone down, just go to the top and contact the director of specialized services, special ed, etc. They should definitely be able to track down the proper support person....

You might want to consider having her eyes checked too. I can't remember what it's called, but a mommy I used to know had a daughter who had great difficulty tracking words along a sentence. Her eyes would jump to different places in a text all on their own! (It had something to do with underdeveloped eye muscles.) Obviously the girl didn't know this was abnormal and just struggled along until mid-third grade!

If you do send her onto second grade, make it very clear to her teacher that reading development is the #1 priority and check in with her often!

Did they do a reading assessment on her?  What level is she?  End of 1st grade they should be at about a DRA level 16, or Fountas and Pinnell level H-I.  If it is just fluency holing her back and not decoding, then I would run fluency drills with her at school and home.  Have her read a short (100 word) passage and time her. Have her read it 3-5 times, timing each time.  Record her, so she can hear herself and how she sounds each time, especially when she is fluent after reading the passage a few times. 

Have they done any intervention at the school with her?  I would ask that she be assessed by a reading teacher at the very least, you can request a full evaluation if you want too. 

How old is she?  Is she a young first grader?  Is she little for her age?  Does she have a good group of friends that she would miss if she were to be retained?

I used to be a Title I reading teacher.  I am not against retention when necessary, but if the gap can be closed without it, it is better for the child.

Also, by far the best reading program that I have seen is FUNdations.  It is usually a k-3 schoolwide program...does your school use that?  It works!!!
