What are the signs that a child is dyslexic?
I got a call today from my 6 year old's teacher. Brianna is in kindergarten. I didn't hear my phone ring so I didn't directly speak to her teacher but she left a voice mail stating that she highly recommends that Brianna attend summer school, she said Brianna has made some improvements but still needs help with certain areas. There have been times while helping Brianna with homework that I've wondered if she's dyslexic. The problem is I know very little about it, my cousin's husband is dyslexic but I'm not really close with them anymore since they moved out of state. Now I'm wondering if Brianna's issues in school could be caused by dyslexia. So I'm hoping some of you could help me out. I don't want to immediately speak to the teacher or my daughter's doctor because I'll be embarrassed if I'm way off on thinking Brianna could be dyslexic. I always thought if Brianna did have something like that the teacher would notice but I recently found out that the school policy has changed, teachers are not allowed to recommend a child be tested for things like dyslexia or ADD. If a teacher believes a child has either condition they can recommend a tutor, or send them to one of the learning groups (my older DD is one for handwriting) which meets and works more on a specific subject matter during the school day. Besides that it is up to the parent to have their child tested for learning disabilities which I'm fine with but like I said I know little about dyslexia or exactly what to look for and I don't want to be embarrassed by speaking of it to her teacher or doctor if she doesn't truly have any of the signs. Oh and I do intend to further discuss Brianna's progress with her teacher, I wrote her an e-mail and asked that she call back this afternoon when she's not busy.
