Update:
The teacher emailed me back. I guess ds has been zoning out a lot lately. Like when they are supposed to be doing independent work, she will look up and there he is just staring off into space. She'll remind him to keep working and he will be like Oh, and go back to working. He's not doing it on purpose, but he's just off in lala land a lot. She said she didn't know if he was just tired or what's going on. She said he shows no signs of the hyperactive part of ADHD...but she didn't come out and say it could be ADD. Next time I'm at school, we're gonna talk more. Hopefully we can figure out what to do to help him. I made an appt with his pediatrician for next week, too.
Ds brought home his interim report card today and I'm frustrated. He's been doing well all year. He struggled in math a little, but has been going to a tutor, and has really improved. But there were a lot of comments that suprised me...like he needs to write neater, he needs to be attentive in class, he needs to work on addition facts, needs to work on reading comprehension...his previous reports were all scored well in those categories.
They couldn't have told me ANY of this before now?! I'm at the school all the time and his teacher couldn't have mentioned anything? None of this came up during previous grading periods? Now at the end of the year, they tell me he has attention problems? There's not much I can do at this point, with 18 school days left.
there is something you can do about - go speak with the teacher!!
If he truly has those problems you need to know specifics. I would be calling a meeting. It could just be that they are trying to find issues, or your son for some reason started to just recently have an issue with it. Either way you need to meet with them.
Thanks for the replies, ladies!
I just emailed the teacher. I'll update when I hear back from her.
