At what age would you or have you let your child walk into a small store and buy something alone?  For example sending your child into a small corner market that they are very familiar with to buy a gallon of milk while you waited in the car?  Let's say its a decent part of town.

I live in a small town, so I have let my 9 year old, daughter go into a few stores by herself.  However, I never would have done it in our home town.

My daughter is 7yr. old.  She wanted to go into the store to buy something.  She had her own money.  It's a small store that she is very familiar with.  I had 3 little boys in the car with me and didn't want to haul them all into the store.  So I parked right in front of the entrance and she ran in and got what she wanted, paid for it and got back in the car in about 5 min. I was a bit nervous.  She was so proud of herself.

Hard question since I rarely have cash.

I did start letting my son wander away from me in a store at 10 years old (like going to the toy section without me), and so I'd have to choose that.
