Are monogrammed items a bad idea for kids?

I have noticed parents getting backpacks and lunch totes monogrammed for their Elem. school age kids. Even hats and jackets.

What are your thoughts?

Not bad idea. What i do is just put their initials on their backpacks and inside jackets(if they wear one)

This is something that I never really thought about. My older son plays football on our youth league, their jerseys aren't labeled. He also plays basketball and their shirts are labelled with their last names.

Quoting kmrtigger:

From what I've read, items (toys and clothing), should have the child's name INSIDE the item but not on the outside where a stranger can take advantage.  You should even avoid clothing like football jerseys that have the child's last name on the back until they're old enough to have the heightened awareness of "I know that person" verses "that person just read my shirt."  There are many places, lillianvernon.com comes to mind, that sell iron-on labels.

I don't bother labeling most things. Lunchboxes and backpacks I just use a sharpie inside somewhere.

The only thing the kids have with their names on them are their scout "brag jackets" where they put their patches. Its never been an issue and they know never to go with anyone that they didn't come with or a family member.

I think it is ok with there initals but not full names or nick names as a stranger can call the childs name. Most younger children think if someone knows there name then they know them and it is ok to go with them. I will put my kids initals on there backpacks as they picked the same backpack but not there name.

Same here. I just use a sharpie on the inside.

I'd do intials, but not full names. There are just too many evil people out there.

A stranger won't be able to call them by name just going off a monogram, but your kid will still be able to tell her things from everyone else's things.

I think initials are OK but names can be a little scarier.

with initials i think is fine but i don't agree with putting actual names on the outside of items.  not safe.
