Maybe I just never picked up on before, or maybe it's a new thing this year... but I keep seeing all these mentions of items on the supply list being for the teacher's personal use.

confused

Nothing in my classroom is for my personal use. Every item is used to instruct the students. Whether or not they touch it, it's there for them. I don't use the dry erase markers to make my grocery list or the paper to print out invites to my kid's birthday party.

I take that back, I do have  nail file in my desk. That is for my personal use. But other than what's in my purse, I can't come up with anything in the room that is for me and not used for the benefit of the students.

Examples of items that are for the teacher and doesn't help the students please?

This is CM logic you're talking about here.

I don't see parents throw hissy fits over supplies. I personally pick and choose my own battles. And honestly, anyone who actually looks at their child's school work will see that their child uses everything. In 2 weeks I could fill a trash can with the completed work he brings back home. I've never been yelled at for asking what something was for either.

I'm going to post my supply list and receipt after I shop :)

Then you'll get to use the baby wipes the parents brought in:)

But I can't decide if cleaning up your own vomit with the wipes would be using the wipes as personal items or if cleaning up the vomit is beneficial for the children so that they can have a smell free environment to learn in...

LOL

If I took a sip of tequila I'd be sick all over the classroom. I suppose that would be a learning experience though.

Quoting MB13:

No, that is used to improve the educational esjppppppperience for your chiiiiiiiiiiiild, HIC! LOL

Each kid in Mac's class has a small dry erase board in their desk. So he'll be using those himself.

I wonder how many ppl ASK about things before getting upset.

little to none.

like I found out zippy bags were for the damn "Everday Mathmatics" program we use that wants "geometric shapes" cut out and stored for unit 6......

and gallon size ones were for the funky snack mixes that went with a science unit they did.....

Ask the teacher. Due to dust allergies from chalk or due to chalk, they now have small dry erase boards in all elementary school desks at our elementary.

The teacher will direct them along the lines of:
"write AT over towards the right of your board leaving room on the left for more letters."

"but a B in front of the AT. What word is it?"

"now erase the B, and write a P. What new word do we have?"

etc.....

Water, gas, electric, phone, office supplies in the main office, salary, health insurance, retirement, buses, bus driver salaries.....
*sigh* our district has a board meeting every other week, and my DH and I try to make one to two a school year (between everything we have going on)....

Quoting ButterflyGenie:

That's for the school board and new buildings, upkeep, additional help, teacher pay increases. It is not for school supplies. I promise.

Quoting jiffypop2207:

So then why do my property taxes go up when the school board votes/approves things

Quoting ButterflyGenie:

No they don't. That would be state money funded for every school. Property taxes go to Waterworks, road upkeep, you get it? Go to your local meetings and find out what property taxes are for in your area. They are not meant to buy school supplies.

Quoting jiffypop2207:

So none of my property taxes go to the schools? I'm not talking about buying pencils and crayons. I'm just saying I figred that the taxes would cover their office supplies. Ya know its like me saying that when you come to my facility that you ned to bring your own bandages before I change your wound dressing

Quoting ButterflyGenie:

You might want to look up what property taxes are for. They difinitely are not for school supplies.

Quoting jiffypop2207:

I stil buy what they ask for I just don't understand why I have to because isn't that supposed to be taken care of with the property taxes I pay? What does that money go to?

I've never thought that any supplies I send were for the teacher's personal use.  My ex MIL worked for over 20 years with local school districts.  If they ask for it, they need it.

First, you're not sorry.

Second, you are one of the reasons that others get upset because they feel they are sending in supplies for other kids. If everyone sent in what the teacher asks for, maybe there wouldn't a need for "community" supplies.
