Okay, so I say to my dh that we really should get the kids into a school bedtime schedule before school actually starts especially my ds since this is the first year he will have to get up early for school.  I was thinking starting over the weekend or next week.  Problem is that bedtime is 8:30-9:00 and it doesn't even get dark til 9:30 or so.  That and kids are used to staying up a little late because of summer time.  Any ideas or suggestions?

DD is 8yo and her bed time normally is 8pm and gets up for school at 7am. During the summer she goes to bed between 8:30-9pm. I start getting her back on 8pm routine about 2 weeks before school starts. Daylight isn't an issue because I have room darkening shades for her room that black out all outside light.

My DD is 5 and has to get up at 545 for school. Her bus comes at 645. She goes to bed between 745 and 815 depending on if she has gymnastics that night or not..it was a hard adjustment last year to get her use to waking up so early...l ol. My parents always started our school routine about 2 weeks before school started so we'd be use to the schedule. As for the sun...IDK...my daughter doesn't mind it too much when its bed time.

I start getting mine back in shape about 2 weeks in advance too. I start by easing up bedtime 10-15 minutes , keep that for 2 nights then bump it up earlier again... then she still has over a week to adjust to it.

I started easing my kids into the routine last week. Their bedtime before was 9:30. Now it's 9:00. Next week, it'll be 8:45. The following week, 8:30, and the week before school, 8:00. My DD will be in kindergarten and school starts at 7:45 (but she can be there as early as 7:30, so that's my goal). DH goes to work early, so it'll be on me to get myself and 3 children (DD-5yrs, DS1-3yrs, and DS2-6 months) ready and out the door. lol. Luckily we live close to the school (5-10 minutes walking), but it'll be a challenge. lol.

I agree, you need to start a few weeks in advance and ease things ahead by 10-15 minutes a day.  I do it slightly different though, as I start by waking them up 10-15 minutes earlier than they typically get up and then that night put them to bed 10-15 minutes earlier.  Waking them up earlier is an important part of this transition as well.  Also remember that elementary aged children need 10-11 hours of sleep per night, so figure their bedtime based on getting 10-11 hours of sleep.

It is a good idea to start now so that he's used to it when it does start.  make sure you get a routine in place.  At our house, 7:00 is bath time, 7:45 is reading time and 8:30 is getting tucked in bed.  We told him what was up.  You may have a struggle at first but he'll adjust within days.

We have kept her bedtime routine the same throughout the summer so that we stay in the routine.  When we were in vacation is when she was up later than usual.

My 5 year old who is going into 1st grade and my 8 year old who is going into 3rd grade have to lay down at 8:30 and lights out at 9pm. My oldest DD 11 years going into 7th grade has to have lights out at 10pm. They all wake up between 6:30 and 7am.
