in public school, are all students reading by 1st grade??
In the schools that I work with most of the students leave Pre-K reading. If not in Pre-K, then they are definitely reading by the time they leave Kindergarten. Also, our state has a standardized test in 1st grade, so the kids need to know how to read in order to take the test.
Maybe find some science books at the library - especially something he's really interested in.
Depends on the school or district. My girls' school, they are able to read simple books by 1st grade. But I know of others in the state that are not reading until 2nd or so.

My oldest son was reading by 3, my youngest by kindergarten. Every child is different. He will read in his own time mama.
