Which would be cheaper?

To buy a large premade birthday cake? Or make my own?

DD is turning 5 in two weeks. I want to get her an awesome cake. All we've really had are simple homemade cakes before. But I'm not very creative. And I'm on a tight budget for her party. Last year I made cupcakes in ice-cream cones. Good idea, but they looked awful. Lol.

Any ideas?

It's usually cheaper to make your own. If you're worried about not being creative enough, make cupcakes and everyone decorate their own, that way you're off the hook : )  Just get a couple cans of white/vanilla icing, divide it up into a few bowls, and add food coloring. Set out some little candies and sprinkles, and you're set : )

Sheet cakes at Costco are really reasonable, look great and taste better!

if you are willing to not have a huge cake, go to an Albertson's and buy the Cookie Monster circle cake. it has been a hit here and our dd is almost 16, so even she loves it at her age too.

When I get a cake from the grocery store, a 1/4 sheet is usually $17-18 which serves 14-24 people (smallish slices).  It would be way cheaper to bake your own.  Depending on what she's into, you can do a sheet cake and dye white frosting to be grass, water, etc and frost the cake and then add little plastic toys like horses, dogs, tiny dolls from the doller store to finish.  After you blow out the candles and cut the cake, she can have the toys to play with and remember her party.  You could also decorate with candy like m&m's etc..

This cake was pretty simple and very good! http://www.google.com/search?tbm=isch&source=mog&hl=en&gl=us&client=safari&tab=wi&q=m%26m%20cake&sa=N&biw=320&bih=416#i=3

I made it with brownies cooked in a small round springform pan, made peanut buttercream (I do suggest some type of buttercream so it is not too moist) the rest you stick on with the buttercream and pour m&m's on top. It is best to fill it so I had my brownie pretty high. The kids loved it and it was delicious and fairly simple but looks great! A very forgiving cake.

It's cheaper to make your own. But if you have a Sams Club or Costco membership, their cakes are pretty reasonably priced.

We have done both. Depending on our theme for the party, what the kids want and how easy it is to find. It is usually cheaper to make it.

Do you have a theme for her party or is there something that she is very into?

I made my kids cakes this year. My daughters was pretty simple. She wanted a Monster High cake so we just did black icing with pink, purple and blue trim. We found a Monster High centerpeice and put that on top. My sons was a little harder but still easy and fun. He wanted a dinosaur, army men, volcano, ocean cake. I made hard sugar candy (blue of course) and poured it into a mold I made out of foil and I had placed some small plastic sharks and stuff in there. I found a mold that had an army tank and army men so we made those out of chocolate. We made sand out of crushed oreos and used plastic dinosaurs. For the volcano we used 3 9 inch cakes stacked up and hollowed out the middle. I frosted it with a chocolate glaze. Then we used marshmallow fluff, red food coloring, water and dry ice to make the lava explode when we sang happy birthday to him.

Walmart, Sams or Costco has a sheet cake for around $15.

Homemade is always cheaper. Depends on how many you are feeding. You can always make cupcakes and set them next to each other and then frost over all of them at once like one big cake and then decorate it with toys and icing from a can (I experiment with nozzles. It is fun.) It won't look like a store bought, but is usually a big hit. And all you do is pull the cupcakes apart. People love it.

It's cheaper to bake your own.

But I always buy them because I can't frost a cake to save my life.
